I have had boats for over a decade, but not a fiberglass bass boat, I am aware of the big things (comp test, test run, transom integrity, etc). Looking at getting one in the next few months. Was wondering if there are known issues with certain year/models I should look at...?

Most if not all of the main brands have composite transoms after 2000. The lesser known brands tend to not "hold up" as well as others over time. But a boat is like anything else, it's all about use/abuse and maintenance. Definitely do your due diligence and check one out thoroughly no matter the age. The new stuff is a bit easier to track with the computer systems on newer outboards.

If you are looking at a boat from an individual; a day on the water fishing is a good way to learn everything about the mechanical issues from loading on the trailer, inspecting the trailer with the boat off, how it handles during the day.

Always crawl under the boat and inspect the bottom for any damage. As you have said request the maintenance receipts. I like to see all the work done on a boat at one place; so they grow to know the boat and a quick talk with the mechanic can ease your mind.

There is so much involved here you need to let us know so more info.
- How old a boat.
- Buying from an individual
- Buying from a dealer

The older the boat the longer the list get.

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.

Besides the obvious items you listed, make a list of the things the boat needs to bring it up to your expectations like electronics, trolling motor, carpet, seats, tires etc. Those things can add up in a hurry. Trailer brakes are also important to consider. Don't get impatient, check out many sources. This website as well as Boat Trader and Craigslist are good places to start a search.

I talked to a boat repair shop and asked what boat do they work on the least because of factory related issues and they told me. They see all of them, brands and year models.

I once fished with a guy in a 1999 champion with a 1999 225 Johnson. That boat was always breaking down and in the shop mainly with motor problem but also with boat stuff too.
Later a friend told me that that year Johnson was known for having problems. And the 99 champs were plain old trouble.

You might want to ask a good shop about the model your are considering
