How many of you use braid on all your reels and tie a flourocarbon leader to your lure?

seems like a big money saver

Just on my spinning reels. Couldn't get used to it on baitcasters . Too noisy on jig rods. Use it on frog rod and flipping rod (straight braid)

I'm doing it more and more. Not so much for money savings, but because of the improved casting distance and generally less line hassle. I've always had a mental hang up adding in another weak point between me and the fish, but I've never actually had a failure at the line junction point.

I do it on a few set ups and really like it. I use the Alberto Knot to tie the floro to the braid. I've been doing it for about a year now and so far I've never had the joining knot break. I've been hung several times and when I break the line it's always broke at the lure knot.

Jpurdue has it dialed in pretty well, I think: it is a mental thing.

And, it has some logic to it, too. A knot is ALWAYS the weakest link in an otherwise flawless length of fishing line. Always. But, for us it is analogous to, say, an engineered high-rise building. It, too, has a weak link; it is just that it far exceeds the pressures expected to be put on it.

That's the key here and why we tie these junction knots. If we are using 10 lbs. braid to 8 lbs. fluorocarbon leaders for finesse fishing, we know we must stay well back of 8 lbs. of force. With spinning tackle, that is almost no issue at all.

Hey! I ask this because I don't know . . . but of the literally hundreds of hours I am supposing were fished with junction knots (main lines to leaders) at the recent Classic on Lake Conroe, does anyone here happen to know if there was even a single break-off at the junction knot? Or, of the line to terminal tackle? Did anyone lose a fish to such a failure???

Brad

I have a heavy rod I use for jigs, frogs, heavier Texas rigs, and Carolina rigs. I have braid spoiled on for frogs and if I need to do a little flipping but fluoro leader for everything else.

I can't stand braid too many tangles.

I have been using braid only for years. Tried moving back to mono or fluro but could not stand getting kinks in the line and losing baits or getting caught in a tree and not being able to just jerk the bait out like with braid. I am getting more serious about tournaments so have recently moved to using a fluro leader on everything except my frog rod and heavy flipping rod. I would say from my experience that you will have to modify your hook set. I broke off multiple times setting the hook and it was not a failure at the knot. I think the hard snap hook set that I was so accustomed to using sends to much of a shock to the fluro. I got so frustrated that I cut the leader off of several rods during the last trip. Problem was that my number of bites went down with straight braid. Would like for other guys opinions also since I am not sure but I believe more of a sweeping hook set is needed, especially if you are used to braid only. I am using 17 lb Invizx for the leader. Maybe I should go with a heavier fluro... not sure. Anyway, good luck and let us know how using a fluro leader works for you.

I been using braid with leaders for several years now, there are a couple of nuances with braid, the dreaded half hitch around the tip after setting the hook, it does catch the wind more than mono, if it ever gets tangled with another lure or line just cut it and re tie, other than that i love the set up.

I'm an old time fisherman and when I started fishing all we had was fiberglass rods and stretchy mono so I learnded to set the hook very hard needless to say floro and I don't get along to well. I have braid on almost all my rods but I use a 10-12 foot mono for my leader and it has enough stretch that it will not break on the hook set and works great for me.

I use a fluorocarbon leader on my flipping rods. Makes it easy to switch to straight braid if needed also.

This is my setup for everything... and yes it is way cheaper. Get the leader knot right and deal with the noise and you wont be disappointed
