I'd buy an 82# motorguide digital. I love mine. If your having problems send to Boris Marine Electronis he can do a rebuild for a whole lot less than a new one cost and it will be like new.

bassproaxt, My next one will be minkota. My friends all have went to minkota and for good reason, they are quite. They both are pretty dependable but until motorguide gets a quite bracket and motor, get minkota.

EVerybody has their favorite, and they will all break at one time or another, but I had a Minn Kota 101 less than 2 years old, and the shaft broke 2 times on me. Both times the trolling motor was out of the water. I would stick with Motorguide.

I have a motorguide 24 volt and about 70 lbs. I like it a lot but it will shut off if you use it on high for more then 3 minutes. Wait 1 minute and it is good to go again. I think it overheats and protecting itself.

Johnny

You're right it's shutting off due to overheating the thermal switch.. plus the more your trip the switch the weaker it gets. Also if it didn't shut off you'd fry the coating on the motor field coils and short the power head out! bolt

If you run it on high a lot you need to go to the 36vt motor and you'll quit having the thermal switch problems.

I had a Motorguide on my first boat, bent the shaft on Fork, and it was a pain to stow/drop forever after that. It was loud, and drained batteries somethin awful. Iswitched to Minnkota and loved it. I also went with Minnkota on my new boat, still love it.

I love my minn kota promaxxum 80. but I will agree with everyone on here, if you use it enough it will break. it is like a ford vs. a chevy. some guys like one over the other.

MinnKota broken shaft equals the end of your day.

Motorguide bent shaft will get you through the rest of the day.

Like Keenen said, this is the ole Ford Chevy argument both are quality units and if you look hard enough you will find flaws with both. I just am not a fan of the shaft minnkota uses.
