After replacing a new battery that had been drained to the point of ruin, I started just unhooking the battery when I put the boat away. I thought it was the Hockey puck for the GPS unit that was doing it since it draws current all the time and should have a switch in line. As it tuns out when I was hooking the neg leads back up for a trip out to the lake the lead for the engine sparked pretty good. What might cause the engine to draw when the key is off? A bad diode? It's a 91 mercury 60.

This is normal for one to spark when you hook up the negative wire to the battery, the charge coils in the stator will make it spark when you hook it up.
