If you using slab i am guessing you fishing for white bass? I always used 17lb and never had any problem. 12 lb is pretty low for a slab and jig. It will break alot. I find that pline work really good. Its more pricy than other. I had double pulled even legal size hybrid and never broken. I even just pull those double white out right into boat and it never broken either.
I always wet the knott before pulling tight together. That help alot.
Hope this help. And yes cheaper line seem to be more trouble than it save.

If you are rigging a jig above the slab, you really need braid. Mono simply doesn't hold up well with the tension. I won't even use mono with just a slab, there is too much shock transferred during the cast and strike.
On my baitcasters, I use 30# PowerPro only. To tie on a jig, I pinch the line and run it through the eye of the jig. Open the loop of line and bring the jig through the loop. Let the line tighten around the jig's eye. It this point you can adjust the height of the jig the desired amount away from the slab. When you have it the height you want, careful bring the jig out and make a loop in the line and then cinch it against the jig's eye. This lock s the jig in place and prevents a fish from moving the jig when caught. You just can't do with mono what you can with braid.

Craig said, that knot needs braid. I tried it with mono and it is way too weak a knot. I use 17 lb mono and use a hoop knot that I can't describe. Lol maybe YouTube has a video I don't know.

This knot works well with 15# Big Game. It is the only method I use. Sandjohnny's technique also is a good one.

I use 14lb Stren mono main line.. I'm catching a ton of stripers and whites on slabs with it.. I experimented with the jig and slab recently.. I rigged it like this from top to bottom... rubber bobber stopped, then slide on my jig... then tie a swivel on. Add about 18" of leader line (I used 20lb big game), then tie on slab... worked like a charm for me and didn't have to take off all the 14lb mono i currently use on all my low profile set ups.

Re tie knots a couple times a trip also really helps, we have used 40# leader and still catches fine and about eliminated all breaks but still re tie often, also went to braid and most problems are gone.

I use 15lb braid with 15lb mono leader that I tie a dropper loop for the jig above the slab. Works great.

I was very skeptical of the web site but for the price, $5 for 50 of them, I tried them and they are a good product. Three way swivel, Bonehead braid with Vicious 15 lb floracarbon. Never had a problem. Lures tied with Hukabee loop knot. https://www.wish.com/m/c/55473dd943985e0c2b6a2973Have since ordered several items and never been dissapointed..
