Hey deckhand I went last weekend and cleaned up my lot. I didn't even take a pole! You are right as far as the fishing goes. Unless we get alot of rain very quickly that puts the river on a rise there will be few if any fish in Smith Ranch/Lemons water.

Well we went and put the old lone star in at paradise point and motored around the point and up the river. I don't knoe landmarks on Buchanon but you could not make it to Alexanders. We actually got stuck and had to break the old paddle out to push our selves out of the mud in the river channel. We did catch quite a few fish off paradise point. The females were loaded and the males were well let's just say anxious.

The river is up about 1.5' today. More rain is on the way, there may still be hope.

Any news on the sandbass run at Colorado Bend State Park?
I plan to drive 4 hours from Dallas on Friday morning and hope it is not a wasted trip.
Thanks!

My good friend and I hit the Bend every Spring for the sandbass run. He already made reservations but if the water is not flowing I may decide to fish Lake Lewisville and save the trip.
Cheers.

My flyfishing buddy and I schld. vacation this week to go to the Colorado River. He owns a lot on the Smith Ranch side. We did not go. The conditions are the worst as anyone can remember in 30 years. Maybe next year!

The river is up about 3' so far, and with a weekend of rain on the way I think it will rise a bit more.

Just talked with the park office. That area got less then 2" of rain and it has not nothing to help. Still no fish and not much water up their way. They are hopping for more rain this weekend. Has to hit in the Brady area to do them much good.

the fish will spawn. there is water running in and they really don't need much. you just have to keep moving down until you find them.I found some fish on travis in a little bitty creek you could walk across that was running into a deep hole.Don't even think it has a name. just gonna take more work but when you find them you will be all alone.

Buchanan got only a few inches of rain. Travis got many feet of rain. It will take 5 to 7 feet of rain on Bachanan before it does much good at Bend. The mouth of the river is five feet above lake level.

Yes, they will spawn. But the question is....where? Most likely, it will not be in Bend. Until that lake rises AT LEAST 5 ft., the spawn will happen at the mouth or in another tributary all together. There are exposed sand bars and a silted-in pipe preventing the fish from getting up stream. I'm hearing reports that even small Canoes and Kayaks can't even get to the river from the mouth of Buchanon without lifting the boat and walking. From Bend to the lake is all private property - so getting out of your boat and walking on shore is basically trespassing. If you go to the USGS lake/river level website, you'll see that when the river rises like it did yesterday and the day before, it immediately starts dropping back to the original level. The gage that is near San Saba has been showing about 2.25 ft. since the drought. After the first round of rain it jumped to about 3.5 ft and then starts down again. Yesterday it was as high as 4.5 ft, but again it's starting to drop back down. All of the water is going to continue dumping into Buchanon until that lake rises at least 5 ft. IMHO - I wouldn't make any long trips to Bend unless you're OK with not catching fish. Without a miracle from Mother Nature, Bend will be a bust this year.
Since fishing is a sport, I guess that makes us athletes...
