Folks standing on the fishing dock were using coke bottles with line wrapped around...is this something new? What is the deal?

I've seen that before. And around cans. Pretty funny. I guess it's people who cannot afford real gear. Or perhaps people who do not have liscences, so if the warden shows up, they just drop the cans.

First trip I made to Lake Guerrero in the 70's I saw a lot of natives using that technique. They would use a spinner bait and swing it over their head and release it to cast. Pretty effective. I think they may have used the three litre bottles for high ratio fast retrieve.

Last year I think, Bassmaster had a challenge in Mexico with about five or six Pros and the had to catch one fish using this method and man was it funny to watch they could not hit the broad side of a barn, but to watch the guides it was second nature. They could place that worn in a tin cup at 40 feet.

Last week we saw some folks catching and keeping salt water hard head catfish from the pier using little sticks with string wrapped around. But, I don't think it was real fishing line.... As best I could tell it was cheap yellow weed eater line! Abraision resistant, but bad memory!

While fishing a T, we watched a grounds keeper at the golf course at Lake Palestine, on his lunch break, catch two nice bass throwing a spinnerbait and reeling it back in on a Mt Dew bottle.
We felt kinda stupid with all our expensive gear and one fish between us that late in the day.

Actually the "coke bottle" concept came from the spool of sting meat buthchers used at their shops years ago and led a man named R.D. Hull to create the Zebco reel.

Interesting story here: http://www.zebco.com/catalog/about.html

Kids in Mexico used the "Coke" bottles years ago because of the tapered necks of the bottles. Don't know how a straight sided can would work though.

Interesting though that we have high dollar rods and reels, big shiny Bass boats, electronisc, etc., etc. and others manage (sometimes better I'm sure) with much less.

People can do lots of things when it comes to putting supper on the table. And get good at it.

The coke bottle or any other plastic container isn't that popular in the us. I'm from the Caribbean originally and it's pretty popular there simply cos it's cheap and it's pretty effective once you get the hang of it. For mangrove/grey snapper it's my preferred choice when using live bait. In fact ther are plastic spools (casters) designed for hand thrown lines that would range in size from 4 inches in diameter to 12 inches. Generally the larger ones for heavier line/larger fish. Try fighting a 25lb grouper on a 75 lb hand line line. Again I think it's all because it's so much cheaper.

I saw a guy reel in about a 15 pound carp over the bridge in laredo on the Mexico side with a 2 liter coke bottle. About 30 seconds later s guy in uniform, riding a bicycle and carying an uzi over his shoulder came up and took it away from him. I admired his fishing technique, but quickly got the heck out of there before there was a disagreement.
Also, the dam below lavon was 3 guys with tin cans catching hybrids and sandbass 10 to our 1 from the bank. I started to ask if they wanted to trade, but I dont think they would have!!

If I remove the poison dart, could you please, please suck out the poison???

I knew some ole boys that used to fish at Moss Creek in Big Spring that would catch more than I would in a tube with Coke cans. I had to try it out, but could never become the expert at it.
