Tangle how so? Are you talking about spool memory?

Big game is the best I've found that's cheap and last forever.

If you are having trouble with monofilament on spinning reels, and you loaded the reels properly to eliminate twist, try braided line. I like Power Pro Slick 8, Sufix 832, and FINS Windtamer. When I fished fresh water I liked Berkley Fireline also, but it doesn't seem to fare well in salt water.

Watch this video & it will help. I still load the line incorrectly sometimes. The twists will disappear it you let the line out behind the boat without a lure & drag it for a while.

Yes. I mean memory. I prefer to use mono unless I go after stripers. I've winded the string on the right way and sometimes put the spool in warm water. Just need a some good string.

I wouldn't use more than 10 lb test mono on 2500 and smaller sized spinning reels. If you continue to reel while fish is pulling drag on spinning reel the "memory" will come back. Lots of good mono, Suffix, P-Line, Bass Pro, to name a few.

Vicious Hi-Viz panfish line is the best I've found for being low memory and forgiving about not wadding up off a spinning reel and just generally staying well behaved. It's low cost and you can afford to change it out often as needed. I order mine from their website and buy the 1/4 lb spools.
http://www.getvicious.com/products/vicious-fishing/fishing-line.html

I've also found I get about a 75% improvement with any mono on a spinning reel when I close the bail by hand after casting rather than cranking the handle to do it. For some reason, that keeps those little small loops from forming on your spool which eventually cause that big huge wad of line to come flying off and all snarled up.

Reel Magic helps most all mono lines when sprayed on the line. Like Don said, letting it trail out behind the boat and dragging it a little while with nothing tied on is a big help periodically and will straighten one right out. If you're bank fishing, tie the end to something then back off till you have most of the line pulled out and pull on it to stretch it just a little. Then cut it loose and reel it back on with tension between your thumb and finger. That will straighten one out pretty good too.

Highbread,

I agree with Iconn4 regarding line size if you are using a 2500 spinning reel. There is simply no advantage going larger than 10 . . . since we fight and land fish differently with spinning gear. One of the great advantages of spinning tackle is we can use lighter lines. Don't give the advantage away.

Reeling against drag, on a spinning reel will simply twist the line. Lift your rod, reel up the slack, lift again, reel.

But, are you talking about spinning reels? I don't think you ever say.

I ask because the video up above, while illustrating spooling on line using a spinning reel, never differentiates the proper direction coming off the line spool between casting and spinning reels. So, for you or any other viewers who might think it is the same for both, it is the opposite for a casting reel.

I wouldn't rely on "label up" either. The better way to remember which direction for the sort of reel is this: If the line spool you are feeding line off of is set vertically, for spinning reels it comes off the bottom (like an under-handed pitch in softball); if it is a bait casting reel, it comes off the top (like an over-handed pitch).

The man in the video never makes the distinction for his viewers so someone watching might assume what he shows with spinning tackle works the same on a bait caster. He likely should have pointed that out. Maybe I missed it.

And, he also appears to be showing monofilament in the video, and you, too, are talking monofilament issues. But, for other viewers, they might assume that taking off and soaking the line is a good idea. Yes, it'd work with mono, but for pure fluorocarbon lines it won't because the latter material doesn't soak up any water. And, it would be of no value for braids, either, since line memory is not a common issue with them.

Again, the man should have mentioned he was speaking of mono only.

Finally, an arbor knot is okay; better though, would be a much faster, stronger and simpler 3 turn Uni knot that will cinch right down. No need for a special knot.

Good point about staying at least an 1/8th inch away from fully winding on line on spinning reels. I have rarely suffered a backlash on spinning tackle, maybe once over a long season owing to some freak event, but if I top off the line, fill the reel spool too full, it really heightens the odds of line troubles.

I would recommend Sufix Elite Mono.

Brad

I'm very partial to Ande, but any monofilament line can get twisted or tangled in the right circumstances.

What do you mean by tangle? Are you getting tangles on the reel, like backlash/birds nest? Or is the line tangling up past the rod tip when you get slack in it? What kind of reel are you using - spincast, spinning, or baitcaster?

Details help to diagnose the problem you're having.

Parenthetically, strings are best for guitars. rock
