 Who kayaks out to the oil rigs to fish?

I've never done it but it sure sounds like fun too me. Just wondering what kayak you use, and what kind of fish you are catching out there. I would like to try it this April, May, or June. Tell me what to expect when I'm out there and essential items to bring along.

My match and me go out to the rigs several times a year. April and may is doable but spring is also the windy season. The hotter the water the better. As far as species,,,well you just never know. Kings, Spanish makeral, cobia, shark, jacks, snapper, spade fish...a couple years ago i hooked a sailfish even. I paddle a viking profish reload and my match has a viking profish 400 lite. A typical day for us offshore is around 20 miles. The currents are another thing to consider. If the current is moving 2 mph then you have to paddle 2 mph just to stay still. We always troll. Water is super important. The big fish offshore can pull you around a long ways. We have been tied together, anchor dropped and still got towed 5.5 miles away from the spot we actually hooked the fish. Most people "get in paddling shape" before the offshore season because fighting fish and long range paddling can definitely wear you out. Go out with someone else, never go solo,,,especially since your new to it. Bad things can happen real fast out there and with no help the water is a very unforgiving place.

Those are nice seaworthy kayaks you have, mine probably wouldn't be your first pick for this type of fishing but I think it will do fine I'm a strong paddler. What are some of the other essential items you and your match bring along. Do you bring more than #50 of gear with you?

Not usually. We keep the load ligbt typically. Pfd, gaff, rods(i like 3, 1 shark and 2 trolling rods), water, drift sock, fish bag, ice and tackle.

Not usually. We keep the load ligbt typically. Pfd, gaff, rods(i like 3, 1 shark and 2 trolling rods), water, drift sock, fish bag, ice and tackle. I like that, just keeping it simple.

One more important thing to take and one to consider.
Take a very sharp knife. It's better to cut the line than get towed 10-15 miles by a big ole toothy fish.
Consider some type of GPS. If you get towed by a monster you can become disoriented as to your location.

The days the weather is good are very few down on the Texas coast. Wind is usually bad. Check out the youtube channel "30 miles out". Ty and Theresa used to live on the coast and have tons of videos on fishing the Texas coast from kayaks. Lots of info in their shows. They dont go offshore much. They stay inshore. Yotube professor salt, he is the one who really goes.

Navionics on the phone isnt bad also any gps fishfinder will work fine. The important thing is to mark the location you start.
