I don't worry about the wind so much but if the cows are laying down might as well play golf and I've proved this many times.

Rest assured that sometime on any given day that there are fish biting on the same lake your fishing. When I quit worrying about all the rest and just decided to start finding those fish my days started getting better. It's not like I turned in to some kind of pro but I just know I have a chance any day of the week. Look at any tournament around here. It doesn't matter which way that winds blows, someone is catching them

What if the cows on the east side of the road are.lying down and the ones on the west side are standing up?

Personally I have never seen every cow on my way to lake laying down at same time. When they lay down I just assume they are tired.

Good point Mark, however, I've never seen a case where cows on one side were laying and the ones on the other side standing. Last Wednesday on my way home from Fork, after not even getting a bite, as I was leaving I saw the dreaded clue, the cows were laying. There was one standing which I assumed he just hadn't learned the rules, lol. Seriously, I visited with several at the ramp and got the same report. One guy did catch a bowfin but they don't count. And you could also think I'm just not a good fisherman and that is a possibility. However I do have a 14.19 on my resume and also won a boat on Fork.
The theory about the cows came from my dad and as far back as I can remember it seems to have held true.
Regardless it has always provided me an excuse when I didn't catch anything so until someone comes up with scientific beyond a doubt proof I'm going to keep using it and I offer it to anyone else who needs an excuse other than an east wind. As far as them laying because they are tired, tired from what? All they do is eat and poop. Feel free to laugh, I just did.

There may be a loose correlation with the passage of a front, which usually means a temperature drop. None of that matters much compared to the biggest causal factor when it comes to reduced catch rates; fishing Pressure. Said another way, I'd much rather fish an east wind Wednesday, than a west wind Saturday, any day of the week.

Actually zero wind is the only killer on the lakes I fish most.

Retirement best job ever.

Well all I can say is that weather makes a HUGE freaking difference. I am a very very very close weather watcher and I am not going to get specific but I have learned over the years when to go and when to not go.
I like to put ALL the odds in my favor since I am no pro who can go out an catch them in all conditions. The saying does have some general merit, but it's way more complex when you factor all the other variables. That is why you see some guys say they had their best days on what one would consider bad days- there were other factors involved.

Bass are like people, they eat everyday they don't give a ---- what the weather is doing. Does it change the bite? Of course it does its just up to us to figure out a pattern that produces bites. Pros do it everyday. That's what separates them from us.They innerstand that bass eat everyday.Nothing else really matters.

I'm in a position where I can go anytime I want but when I was employed and the weekend was the only time available I went regardless of the weather. Even fished at Fork once when the first 3 feet of shoreline was frozen. That was the winter of 86. If the weather is unfavorable on Monday I'll go Tuesday or Wednesday or both. I don't fish in a driving rain storm or if it's too cold or too hot. Retirement has it's benefits and I take advantage of them and besides I like golf too. Since there are no cows where I live I have gone and found out too late I should have played golf like last Wednesday.

Thank you all for commenting, i know that this saying has no effect on the fish at falcon, but that north wind might have an effect on the fisherman.
