You catch a fish now and then that will do that. It's called shedding scales. Ha..
I would say that is BAD.

Don't know where you live but I would get that to Rockwall Marine ASAP. Or, you can email Tommy a pic but safe thing is take it in for inspection.

Yes, sounds like LU is shot, but as said get a good mechanic to look at it.

Depends on your skill level with a wrench. I've had my LU apart to change the prop shaft. Pulling the carrier bearing is the bear. After getting that, the rest wasn't too bad. Replace the seals and every o-ring on anything removed.

Definitely get it checked out, can be dangerous, I know from experience. Last year mine went out. I was running about 60 mph in a gradual turn when she locked up. It threw me into an instant 90 degree turn. I was able to hold on, and thank God no one was with me cause they would have flown out. Good Luck! JR

If you buy the factory manual not clymers, ($75.+) and follow it exactly yes you can. Also your should have a general knowledge of gears, clutch dogs, bearings, seals, and tolerances. You may have to buy a couple of special tools or fab some of your own. Depends on make model and year. You should make sure and check the input shaft, bearings, and pinion gear on top of l/u also. Just because you found something on bottom doesn't mean something on top didn't cause it. I have done some. Mostly omc and a couple of mercurys. It can be frustrating and time consuming if you've never done it before. If you want to fish soon better take it to someone that knows how. : My 2cents:
