Fished the Brazos below Lake Whitney today and in addition to four or five dozen white bass we caught two of these. The only sunfish I've ever seen with this long of an ear are redbreasts (which I have never caught, only seen pics of). These two fish had the coloration of a bluegill but had the extended ear. Is this just a long eared bluegill, a redbreast with weird coloration, some sort of a hybrid or something else completely? One hit a pink near deer and the other a white 1/16 oz jig. Thanks.

Don't let the name throw you off. they also go by the common name "yellow belly". The males can have yellow, orange or red breast. Females are less colorful with yellow or pale red breast.

I'm pretty sure it's a pure redbreast, just in winter colors. I find that I catch them most often under dams and in swifter current than you would find bluegills. Good catch! Nice size! They are one of my favorite fish to fish for and probably my favorite sunfish.

Thanks for the quick replies. The second one that we caught was a smidgen bigger than the one pictured. They were not in too fast of current, but they were in the fastest current available. They definitely put up a good fight.

Nice Redbreast! Strong bait hitters and pretty good fighters on ultra light!

Got another fish ID question. This is likely just a bluegill, but the copper/rust-colored accent mark behind the ear (which was more noticeable in real life than it is in the picture) has me wondering. I caught six of them this size today on an Elk Hair Caddis. These guys really put a bend in the fly rod. They were really fat so although I know they are not spawning yet, they sure looked like they were ready to pop.

I say hybrid of some sort. Possible redear x bluegill? Could be. There aren't a ton of redear at Bethany Lakes (bluegills and green sunfish are the main sunfish species), but I have caught them before so this could easily be a hybrid. They were super aggressive and really fun to catch. All six of them came from an area about 2-3 square yards.
