Deep thought for a Friday afternoon....
I was just watching a video on some of these new 3D fish finders like the Garmin Panoptix. I can envision a day when folks are out on the lake wearing virtual reality headsets, which are hooked up to fish finders, and it allows you to essentially look into the water and "see" everything. I'm not sure if I find that thought awesome or frightening...
Throw me a bone if anyone runs with this idea and makes millions!

I know marine electronic technology is advancing far faster than any of us could think. I just got my first SI unit on my boat, and showed it to my dad. When I did, I got the typical "back in my day" story. It's crazy to think how far electronics have come in 30 years or so. But what's even crazier is to think of what the next 30 years will bring.

If it will make money someone will invent it. I'm still amazed that I can send emails instead of writing a letter and buying a stamp to send it. Glad I don't have to buy paper for the paper graph I used for many years.

I really like the Humminbird 360 concept, but all of the images I've seen look very grainy and difficult to figure out. I think they will have something similar soon with a much, much better image. Something like the down image screen in the 360 format. You won't need VR goggles then, you'll just look at one screen to see all the fish around the boat. The technology is there, I think the software just has to catch up.

With side imaging as good as it is, I'm surprised there hasn't been anything with "forward" imaging just yet to allow someone to see that submerged stump before you run into it.

Another thing that puzzles me is the side imaging views with white as the color used to identify the fish (suspended object). We need an option to turn the items suspended in the water a bright pink or bright lime color. Then, it's much easier to tell the suspended objects from the bottom.

Agree the technology already exists. There is a difference between seeing something on a screen and seeing something right in front of you that give you depth perception and full range of motion. I can envision people casting to bedded bass they see through VR but cannot see with their naked eyes due to muddy water etc.

screw it, an ocular implant that locates all fish and you can see them at any depth

I think panoptix type stuff will be the future. No more "history" imaging or sonar, all live, real time. Current sonar and imaging will still have its place in just going out graphing but on the trolling motor live is the future.

good afternoon,
I think the full blown dash with all the "info" is then next big step.....gages and depthfinder, etc in one unit....like on some race cars......including all the bells and gadgets.
just saying......I guess you could do it with larger units but its not the dash board......
good luck, PURA VIDA, bluebonnet2

Well as a "fart smelling engineer" (LOL) having designed Military Avionics display systems with the challenge of ensuring NVIS (Night Vision Compatibility) as well as Sunlight Readability at 50K feet altitude (much brighter up there due to less atmosphere); I see HUD (Heads Up Display) as a future generation. I imagine that the HUD would also via a low profile pod installed on the back pad of the boat will emit very high frequency pulses that would help with avoiding stumps much in the same way as back up sensors and cameras on current automobiles help to avoid bang ups but what I'm talking about is about being on pad at speed running through timber.
I also imagine an eyepiece (polarized of course) that would project an underwater image based on where you look. Much in the same way as the Bell Cobras and Sikorsky Apaches link to the machine guns.
Yes it will happen. As time goes on we seeing a revolution in the capabilities in electronics. And is this type of "imagination" that causes these types of advances.
However I just need to learn how to make them bite my lure when I get to go fish... LOL
