Anyone have opinions on a great unit? Looking to get one to listen while at the ER. I remember grandpa having one in the living room and sitting for hours listening. I have an app on my phone but it's very spotty on the communication.

Stephen is probably right, a lot of stuff is encrypted these days but there is still enough out there to make it interesting.
You're in Forney? Most of Dallas PD and FD is still in the 460 range (there's a great scandal about that)I can give you the frequencies.
I still use a Radio Shack PRO-91 but it can't do any of the Trunked stuff.
You might want to talk to some guys in The Dallas the Amateur Radio Club https://w5fc.org/ and see what they recommend.
Besides Police and Fire a scanner is a great way to keep track of weather. The HAMS trained as storm spotters give great live reports in your area and you can follow along live as it is happening.

Yes, you can get a current one from many places. Most of the Police/Fire/EMS use the 800 Trunking system. You will pick up most of the action, but occasionally the band may jump to a different channel causing you to miss a little here and there.
