Anyone on here bust out the fly rod for the sandy run? Never seen anyone try but Im sure they'd be a blast to catch on a 4wt. Curious if anyone has tried and what flies best to use. Tandem silver streamers maybe?

What j moe said...
They do like white and the bigger you can toss the better
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

1/80z jigs under and indicator work great. Clousers in plain white work really well for me.

I will try it this weekend. Jmoe gave me a bunch of clousers he tied him self. Yet to try it out yet. Should of bring it last week. Condition was favorable. I didn't have to but whip that fly 5 feet from the shore to get that clouser in front of their faces.

IMO, the lighter the rod, the more fun. I fish with a 2wt TFO and my buddy uses a 3wt. We have both broken these rods. No worries...TFO has a great guarantee policy.

Yes, I "bust out the fly rod" all the time for white bass...but my fly rods are rarely in need of busting out, LOL, as they are in use most every day.
I love to fish the Sabine River white bass run with flys. Catching 3 plus pound whites on the fly in that river is a real hoot.
Only one fly needed...a white and chartreuse Clouser. I prefer to use T14 or a full sinking line to get the fly down quickly. The sparser the Clouser, the better generally.

I will take that Challenge! The Sabine has never been kind to me, but I have milked her once or twice, if these produce this weekend I'll be caught!

That is what has kept me away from TFO. I see posts all the time about their great warranty, but it seems their rods are always breaking. The warranty is great, but I prefer rods that are a little less fragile. I have read horror stories on multiple forums about BVKs breaking in various ways, but their Clousers seem to have a good reputation so I may go that way when I get my next rod. And to keep this white bass related, the flies we have caught the most fish on this year are two of the most classic flies out there: chartreuse/white clousers in clear water and olive woolly buggers in stained water.

I have several TFO Pro IIs and have never broken one. My 7 wt. is my go-to rod on the coast, and my 2 wt. gets used more than any other rod I own. I also have a 10 wt. that sees a good bit of use. I have broken several fly rods the past few years, but none of them were TFOs. Almost all of my rods are TFOs or Orvis. But none of my TFOs are BVKs.
