I have 2 lowrance hds 3 units in my boat. one in the bow and one at the console. they are networked together. im wanting to add a point-1 antenna. do I need two or can I just use one and how hard are they to install? thanks

IMO, you need only one. You will need a required NEMA starter kit and maybe 1 extra "T" - I don't remember. See Lowrance web page for details, which mentions the need of this. The install is elementary. I have mine set at the stern. Some install it on the bow, some at the console. For my setup, I set the bow HDS 9 G3 to 'this unit'. If you don't know what this is/does, I think it goes something like this: Settings, Network, Data Sources, GPS (Select [THIS DEVICE]). This is critical if you have a Xi5 and want to network it too.
For power to the Point-1, I used the Accessory switch on the console, which had nothing connected to it. If this is available, it's an easy point of power. Just make sure the amp fuse is the recommended size per instructions.
Calibrate as instructed. I'd have to read manual to re-calibrate as it has been some time ago.
