If you are considering adding solar panels in Texas something to consider is the negative affect that tempature has on the amount of output power. In Texas when we get the most amount of sun is also the hottest time of the year generally. Every degree above 77 degrees is going to negatively impact the efficiency of the panel. When a salesman pitches the panels to you the payback is usually figured at the standard testing temp of 77 degrees. It's important to remember that any time the temp is above that your payback will be extended. Here in Texas that can be a lot of time.

Even if they didn't generate electricity, they'd block the sun from your roof, and that has got to add some value to make up for at least part of the power loss form the heat.

Even if they didn't generate electricity, they'd block the sun from your roof, and that has got to add some value to make up for at least part of the power loss form the heat. That's true, but it's in the noise as far as the calculations are concerned. That's especially true if you already have radiant barrier roof panels and/or good attic ventilation, both of which negate a large percentage of heat coming from the roof into your home. Regarding the outside temp and efficiency, salesman use payback calculations using that figure but also quote payback in the 3-5 year range. That's why a real payback period of 5-10 years is more realistic. The question is whether you can get through those 5-10 years without a hail storm with over 2" hail. Most of the time even in this climate, you can. I've never personally experienced a hailstorm at my home with hail over 2" and I'm 32 years old. But it's a risk for sure. Anyone with solar panels in Wylie last year probably did lose them. But that hail was destroying everything in its path: skylights, exterior windows, cars, etc.

In the summer when my shirt and towels get wet from swimming, I put them on line and let the sun dry them.

You better want to live there forever cause you just limited your potential buyers to hippies, greenies, tree huggers, etc. This is getting nominated for dumbest post in the history of the TFF. Who wouldn't want free electricity in their new home? Other than idiots... I've looked into them and they're not resistant enough to hail to be really appealing in this part of the country. They're allegedly resistant to anything under 2" in size, but it's not completely out of the question for us to get baseball sized hail or larger around here. But if you were buying a house and got the panels for free, you'd be literally insane to pass that up. If they get damaged in a hail storm, you get a check for the replacement cost minus your deductible. Win-win. Most of the panels I've seen are installed on the back side of your roof away from the street. If you care that much about how the roof on the back of your house looks, then you probably live in a neighborhood where you don't need the electricity savings anyway. But they are getting more efficient and more affordable. I'll definitely re-consider them in the next few years. People with money that buy proper houses and don't want that nonsense on their roof nor any headaches like dealing with it. You make think that free electric bill is a big deal, it isn't. A person with sense knows there are no free lunches. Maintenance, replacing damaged ones, God knows what else. I have a well, in theory other than electricity to run pump my water is free, accept that sooner or later there will be a problem and it will cost 5k to fix it, maybe more. So is my water really free? Guaranteed I know a bunch of people who money isn't their problem, every last one of them would look at 2 identical houses one with the [censored] one without the craps on the roof and they all, 100 percent would not even consider dealing with that junk. The one house I have seen it on is in the worst neighborhood in aledo where most are rentals. I'm sure the person is not that sharp or he wouldn't be there.

I own a solar/electrical company so I can give some insight. Bottom line is depending on where you live and who your provider is makes all the difference in payoff. Most major providers like Oncor, TXU, etc. offer rebates for converting to solar. This is because it reduces strain on their grid. If you do apply and get approved for a rebate it can cut down your ROI to as little as 3-5 years. No rebate = more upfront cost to pay back and a 5-10 payoff. Also there is a federal tax credit of 30% you can apply for. As for hail damage. Yes panels are covered under most insurance plans. If they get damaged chances are you are needing a new roof as well and are paying the deductible anyway. Also, they increase your homes resale value. So if you move, you can sell for what you have invested in most cases. DOW powerhouse solar shingles look nice but are pricey. If anyone would like to speak in more detail you can PM me or visit my page integratedsolar.us Tight lines.

Anyone with a bass boat knows that batteries don't last too many discharge cycles and are expensive. The solar panels are like the battery charger...they will last longer than a battery. The question of ROI comes down to "What's the battery life for a system?"

The question of ROI comes down to "What's the battery life for a system?" Admittedly, I haven't looked into this. I think the life of a solar cell is much better than the life of a battery cell, but anyone who is considering adding solar panels should look into this as a consideration. If anyone here already knows the answer, please chime in because I'd like to find out.

I think you can back feed these systems into the public line and make money(if you aren't using them).....am I right?
