My bilge pump is inop, all the writing has worn off the old one, and I can't tell what size it is. I have a 2000 Nitro 929 21ft. I assume bigger is better, so should I go with a 1250gph or more?

Bigger is better if your boat is taking on water, even from heavy rains. I actually have 2 that size for my 20 ft Stratos

If the pump is too big it will just pump air sometimes.

If the pump is too small, your boat will sink.

All you need to know.

Bigger is not better.....and it is not safer either:

such as when you boat is taking in water and the too large of replacement pump stops working because it pulls more current than the wire or circuit protection allows.

Replace it with the correctly sized, previous pump. If you don't know that, call manufacturer and find out.

the hose size should be different on most of your bilge pumps for the different sizes, take your old one out and match it to one on the shelf by your hose size. standard size for most boats is 500 GPM

I called BPS and the person I spoke with said he "thinks" it's 2000gph, I guess I could get away with a 1500gph.

Most Nitro boats came with 500gph. I replaced mine with 1250 gph. Just in case. I also upgraded my livewell pump from 500gph to to 750 gph.

Wires on new pumps was the same as the old pumps.

Simply check and make sure the new pump is rated to use a breaker/fuse the size you already have. Bet you find them pretty universal. Past that bigger is always better when you stuff that bow through a wave one nasty day!

You asked a technical question of someone at BPS? LOL, mistake #1 there.

While Lou is correct that too much load for wiring is dangerous, the practical fact is that I've never seen a pump with 3/4 inch discharge hose specify a fuse bigger than 10A, and most call for 7.5A. Most any modern/standard bass boat harness is built with 16 gauge wire that can handle that category load. I just checked a typical Mayfair 1000 gph pump and found it required a whopping 3.2 amps, so I can't see why you wouldn't do at least thathe amount of upgrade.

My personal opinion is that most boats are built with way too little pump capacity. I routinely replace my new boat's 500 gph auto pump with a 1250 gph auto unit. I then up size the second pump plumbing to 1.25 inch and go with 1600 gph instead of a typical 750gph. So my stock ability was 1250 gph for two pumps, but 2850 gph after my upgrade. I typically have to up size the fuse to 7.5A or 10A for the larger pump, but the 16 ga. wire was adequate. Now I stand a better chance of keeping my boat afloat if something goes badly.
