If I'm going after whites I fish 10# trylene and maybe 8# on another rig if I'm fishing in clear water. I've caught stripers with those line weights, and I've lost a few as well, but I'm usually not targeting them.
Usually you aren't fishing around heavy brush and are in more open water, so I want to get more bites with the lighter line, so I'd hate getting out fished just because I'm using heavier line waiting for that one huge bite.

Just one more cast!

I use Suffix 832 #20 or #30 for stripers and hybrids.
#65 power pro for pulling heavy Mac rigs.
Line capacity and drag settings play key role

15 lb power pro with 20lb mono or fluro leader. I throw soft plastics, swim baits and top water with it. That's all you need. Any heavier line, you may lose some casting distance.

I use 12 lb Berkley Vanish yellow or red tinted fluorocarbon. The color helps me see the line better. 10 lb works well too, but I lose more baits. I tried 8 lb but it has too much stretch. When water is really clear and you're fishing shallow (12 ft or less fow),line thickness can matter. White bass sitting on the bottom can be finnicky enough to bite on 10 lb line when they wouldn't on a 14 lb line when swimming a Mepps spinner.

For both whites and hybrids/stripers - 15 lb Seaguar Invizx. 12 lb invizx if throwing deep cranks. Love that stuff
