Looking to get my first kayak. Mostly fishing lakes and the occasional river. I'm 6'2 220. The 2 kayaks I have in mind are the wilderness systems tarpon 100 ($450) and pelica icon 120x ($300). The tarpon is used and a 2016 model. Thanks

I have been trying to figure out which one to buy my self.. Iv watched a lot of videos and read a lot and I have two choices in mine. The Perception Pescador Pilot 12 Pedal or the ascend fs128t. I hope you have better luck then I, it's super hard trying to decide. Good luck to you!

You're right up against a safe weight limit if you're 220 lbs and the weight capacity of the Tarpon 100 is only 325 lbs. Factor in your weight + gear + seat + anything else, and you don't want to exceed about 70% of the stated weight capacity of the kayak. Performance will suffer, and you can have a wet and unsafe ride.

It adds up fast!! If you put to much weight in a kayak then it is designed for it sits lower then it was designed for. Making it sluggish, not as stable, turn poorly, and just not perform well. If you wanted to stay with wilderness I would say to have a look at the Ride 135. No matter what kayak your leaning towards do your self a favor and test drive it first.

So what do you recommend for under $500? I have been searching craigslist for 8 months now and can't find anything in my price range. Thanks for the advice everyone

lots of kayaks for sale on facebook , look into that.
I agree a tarpon 100 maybe to small for you. I am 6' and found the leg position to be uncomfortable.

There are a lot of deals to be had out there. Look at some wilderness rides. You can generally find those pretty cheap and they are great boats. Good luck on your hunt
