I recently saw an episode of Crappie King TV where a guide on a Mississippi lake was calling those Racing Stripe Crappie like we've all seen on some of our local reservoirs " Magnolia Crappie " and his claim is that they are a hybrid of white and black crappie. Do any of our local experts have any information or opinions to prove or disprove this claim?

Some hybrids Have a racing stripe, but not all racing stripes are hybrids. 99% of those black nose or racing stripe crappie caught in the wild (vs a stock pond where there are specially bred hybrid crappie that are a cross between a white crappie and a racing stripe) are plain old black crappie with a strip down their nose.

This^^^^ magnolia crappie do appear in lakes like fork and LOP, though. Several years back James caught a monster at the now defunct LFSA crappie tournament and weighed something ridiculous, somewhere around 3.64 or something. Maybe bigger but it didn't qualify as a lake record because it was a hybrid. Hopefully he chimes in and clarifies my possible innacuracies.

Yeah it weighed 3.34 and is a hybrid waiting for txpwd to open a hybrid record slot. They are rare but out there. The black crappie with a stripe is a black crappie. A hybrid looks like black but has 6 spines on the dorsal. Not enough studies done on them.
