So I just bought a boat and was going to go drifting for some blues but got out and couldn't find and shad. I put out at oak point ramp and in the summer time I can catch them off the rocks there but haven't ever tried to catch them in the winter. Is it even worth trying to find them or just buy frozen? Thanks

Look for them in 25-30 ft of water and throw a heavy 7' net with 5/8 mesh. Should get you 2-6 nice big gizzard shad per throw in water that deep. Sometimes more. I have good luck right after dark. Be happy to show you how some time when I have a blue cat trip. Running mostly crappie trips right now.

I would take Jackie up on that. Finding and catching shad is a huge part of the equation. Once you get the shad figured out, finding cats will be much easier! You can always throw right next to the bridge columns and catch a few if you don't know where to look. Still need a deep water net though. Good luck!

Just like Jacky and Azul said, 7 foot heavy net. Look into Tim Wade cast nets. You can call him personally and he will make what ever you want. First throw with his net near bridge columns and caught more drum, threads, and gizzards than I needed. I have luck finding shad almost always at little elm bridge or running to the cut or old dam.

I was on the water yesterday and majority of all the shad where in water deeper than 20. Mostly 25 plus. My net wouldn't reach them well. If you find 25-30 water you will find the shad for sure.

I do morning trips during the week. Just a little warmer throwing that net right after dark his time of year.
