Canals in the Miami area, Southern most parts of the everglades. I fished there about 4 years ago , it was only a couple years after a freeze. I put about 20 fish into the air , landed about half of those, The guide said on a good day before the freeze , they could hook over 100. Biggest was about 4 lbs. The species that was stocked is not the one that gets to 20 + lbs.
I will look for the guides name I used.

Fished with Alan Zaremba in Miami canals 2 yrs ago this month. Despite a monster front blowing in we caught Peacocks to 51/2 lbs. I fished a fly rod and friend fished conventional tackle. Knowledgeable hard working guide and good guy to spend a couple of days with. Floridapeacocks.com

Some people go to church and think about fishing. Some go fishing and think about God.

This would be a great oppourtunity to combine a tarpon trip with the peacock trip. I would suggest going in april or may the Tarpon came from the Ft Lauderdale area. I can get you the name of that guide if you are interested MO

I went a few years ago caught and caught a bunch of 2-3 # and a couple of 4 and 5's. I think I went with Hawg Hunters besides the peacock I caught a 14" chiclid (spelling) hooked 4' tarpon and chased around a school of snook. It was a very enjoyable trip.

It would be a shame to go to Miami and only fish for peacocks. My good friend Cordell can put you on snook, tarpon, jacks, cichlids, and many other species on foot or by kayak or canoe depending on the time of year. He was a fishing guide in Alaska before becoming a guide in Miami. I lived down there for 25 years and watched him become a respected guide. When his new website is soon completed you should give him a call if not just to get his opinion on what all you could do and the best time of year. http://bonefishwhisperer.com/

I fished Florida 2 weeks ago. I used hawg hunter for peacocks and Midas chiclid in Miami. It was a blast and frank was an excellent guide. We also caught some decent black bass too. Who ever you use be sure to tell them you want to catch a Midas. They are picky eaters compared to peacocks but are a bright orange fish that fights well.
Key largo is an hour south of Miami and It is Gods gift to fishermen. I use Blackfoot guide service to chase fish there. Mike is an excellent guide with a great personality. Not only can he put you on fish he also can show you wild manatee and crocodiles. I agree that it should be timed to catch peacock and tarpon at the same time. These two fish will haunt your dreams and cause you to return to Florida many times to chase them.

Something else to think about....I flew from Houston to Miami for 52$ and returned for 98$. Rent car was around 200$ for a week. Hotels are pricy in Miami and the keys but much cheaper in homestead and Florida city. There are also campgrounds that I have used but require booking well in advance because they fill up.
I have made the 21 hour drive from my house to key largo and can say the 2 1/2hour flight is much better.
