I posted a Craigslist ad to sell something. Got 2 texts asking if I would accept a cashier check and hold the item til after check cleared. They were willing to pay additional amount for holding it. I told them cash only as it sounded like a scam. What is this?? How do they scam you? Or is it legit?

My wife had someone do the exact same thing, and she too felt like there was something up and told them no. They did not respond after she declined there offer. If someone here knows what this is I'd like to know as well.

Isn't a cashier check guaranteed funds. Why would you need to wait for it to clear?

Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.

The cashier check will be counterfeit. They will ask you to deposit it into your account and usually the "extra" is for you to keep some of it for your trouble and wire the rest to their "shipper" Or something like that.
It can take up to ten days or so before the check comes all the way back to your bank as counterfeit and they will then debit those funds back out of your account. At least that is how it was explained to me by the one person i dealt with in person on a car purchase who fell for it and got burned for the "shipping" money that he wired with cash he got out of his account after depositing the fake check that was cleared by his bank - until it came back as bogus but by then it was too late for him. He'd already lost his $1100.

These types are usually automated spambot programs baiting the hook for you to eventually click on a link that attaches spyware or keyloggers that steal passwords and banking info. Dont reply or interact.
