I have had a good service life from my current Whirlpool washer and gas dryer. We purchased them 22 years ago when we bought the house.

I've had one issue with each, minor stuff that was easy to diagnose and repair. Just recently the washer has started to stop during a cycle and you have to turn the knob to get it running. I think rather than try to repair I will replace the set.

What brands are the best to buy and do you like top or front load washers and dryers? Mine were top load washer and front load dryer, pretty standard.

I would recommend you keep it simple. Don't go with the cheapest washer because they will tear up some clothes...my wife picked one up when the last one broke and I swear I spent more on ruined clothes in a year than she spent on the washer.

Top load washers,as front load tend to smell and leak. Get one with an agitator...gets clothes cleaner. I also prefer one without all the digital junk.

Speed Queen is supposed to be the best. I've used them at the laundry mat and at the University. They are very good.

Our first set was a wedding gift. They were still working when I got rid of them after about 13 years. In the last 8-10 years I have gone through numerous sets of front loaders and am on second set of fancy top loaders. None last buy the warranty. Good luck. I spent 2 months last year at the laundry waiting on repair that never came to.

We had Kenmore for 17 years replace a belt than the wife wanted a top load washer. We got another set of kenmore that was 7 years ago, they will go to the new the house in a couple of month.

We bought a front load Maytag Neptune 15 years ago and they refuse to die. I have learned to hate front load washers and will replace them with a top load, no agitator unit...if they ever die. Not sure which brand, but no more front load for us.

We've had a set of Whirlpool front loaders for about 8 years and never had a problem. Front load type use less water and I think even less detergent.

The "smell" from the washer is not an issue if you'll either leave the door open a bit or use a dry cloth (I use a wash cloth) to wipe out the lower part of the opening to dry it out.

Well, as mentioned, those older washer and dryers were built to last.

So why buy new? Find a good used appliance place, save some bucks and get back to more important things, like fishing.

Or either fix or HAVE the current one fixed. A fraction of the cost of new.

My washer has a similar problem. It stops at the same spot each time. I don't touch the dial. If I see it hasn't finished the cycle, I simply drop the lid, and it finishes the load. Not too hard to do!!!

Don't get the water saver ones they are awful , just waste water thank me later

Middle of the line top loader, extra large capacity Whirlpool or Kenmore. Even if there are just two of you the large capacity will be the best choice when the missus needs to wash the bed spread, blankets etc. In my humble opinion the energy/water saver features aren't worth the trade off for the extra repairs and time it takes for a complete cycle. Most washers you can set the amount of water to clean with and set the timer for the amount of time to run. Old school wins out in my opinion.
By the way it sounds like the timer is the culprit this time. Spin the knob on the timer around without it being on; sometimes the contacts get buildup on them and spinning the knob will clean it off enough to keep it going.

I got a set of old Whirlpools out of my grandmothers house. They were 16 years old and I got 4 more years out of them. I then bought a new set of basic Whirlpool top load washer and a Whirlpool dryer and they are 15 years old and still going strong. I have replaced an idler pully on the dryer, the part was 12.00 delivered. IMO, stay basic old school on washers and dryers.

Dont buy Samsung.

I will probably have a 1.5yr old lg top loader for sale, works perfectly.

bosses wife decided she wants matching w/d so new is sposed to be on order.

Whirlpool makes the majority of washers and driers.
