In the olden days...( when I was younger)...
Sandies ( White bass)...or whatever you want to call them, would " herd" shad and slaughter them at the surface. These schools would stay up for a LONG time. Seagulls would join in the feast, picking off wounded shad.
I was a kid, without a boat, but when they schooled in casting range, it was awesome!!!
Then, according to Darwin, those fish got culled out of the gene pool. Now, it's rare to even see a sandie surface feed.
They are still vulnerable to electonics, and indeed, you can put a hurt on them when they are schooled up deep. ( Jeeze , Who woulda ever thought over 100'? (Another story for another day!)
You know what I think would be the best thing ever?
Professional Carp tournaments! SERIOUSLY!!! Think about it. And NO CATCH AND RELEASE! ( Why BASS?) Gonna release em anyway. Why not two birds with one stone?

I'll go you one better. Take the creels and feed them to the homeless.
You think I'm kidding, or stupid? You haven't eaten carp.
They were imported from Germany as a food fish. If you've ever eaten tuna or salmon, you have an idea what carp is like.
