Now that the weather has turned I'm thinking of a road trip to Fayette tomorrow. I'm a first timer so my expectations are mixed. Cold in the morning then warming to 60 with a southerly 8mph wind. Any advice for a first timer would be greatly appreciated. While I'm there I'm going to do a drive by look at the cabins. If everything works out someday I'll do an overnighter later in the year.

Discharge. Traps, tx rig or shakey heads, or drop shot. Near the rock. Pretty much it all works.

I've had good luck flipping plastics in the timber in the cove by the dam. You can always throw an underspin or spinnerbait through the shad that hole up in the discharge too. You can pretty much throw your confidence baits anywhere on that lake and pick off fish. I will say that the pure numbers and size are out deep on structure. Carolina rigged french fry's or brush hogs are your friend. Be sure to dip the tails in chartreuse! You can always go the length of the dam with a crankbait and catch fish as well. Green pumpkin, red bug, and blue fleck are the only 3 colors you need in soft plastics. As far as hard baits and wire baits, any white or shad color, or even chartreuse/blue back will work. If you like to flip a jig, go with a dark color like black/blue, black/brown, or just straight up green pumpkin.
Good luck!

If you live in the Houston area, your biggest challenge will be getting there. 290 is so jacked up almost to Hempstead that I just quit trying to get there.

Pick a point and c-rig a brush hog go to the coves by the dam and find the creek channel closet to timber and throw a WM/red 10" worm in and around the creek and timber. throw a rattle trap in the discharge area,,,,both sides

The one where the water is flowing "out" towards the lake...... west I think. from Houston just use I-10 west to Columbus and go up 71 towards LaGrange ,,,,,,,, stop and get some kolaches or cinnamon rolls at Huskas. No traffic,,,,easy drive.

Discharge is on the north side of the dike. What everyone said should catch you some fish. Drop [censored], Crig, trap around the rocks. You can fish the dike also all the way out to the end with the same techniques. If that's not working try cranking the dam with a 5 or 6 xd. I could go on but really you can usually catch them any way you want to put there. PM me if you want some more info.

Take 529 to Bellville, then 159 to avoid 290. I-10 gets just as stupid as 290 if there is an accident in the 2-lane portion. All of the above techniques...and I like dropping spoons on schools offshore also.
