I catch plenty of reds i catch more flounder than i can count but my real problem is being consistantly productive on specks i have a kayak and i wade fish about 2 times a week in east bay i just need some help fellas.

You are not alone on spec results. I think that there are several reasons.
Its harder to find them.
They are more sensitive to noise
They have been overfished (the new 5 limit should help)

To improve IMHO
Wading is more productive.
Look for bird activity.
Look for slicks
Look for small oyster reefs
If you smell something like watermellons you are close to finding them.
The only time I've maxed out was when I went to Baffin bay and the land cut
Fishing at night under lights works.

where along the coast do you fish for starters? because this time of year keying in on the right areas is the biggest key, i.e. shell/mud, deep holes, mud/grass.

Big Specks are "Loner's"......staying by themselves and hugging the shorelines looking for his next meal.

I have heard good reports of folks fishing in the 3rd gut of the gulf during the dog days.

You mentioned East Bay...it is prime winter speck grounds especially around confederate reef. Kayak there and wade the reef. Gaurantee you will catch a trout.

With winter already here (somewhat), I would search for deep water (at least 5-6 feet deep) with nearby oyster shell.

I live in south Louisiana and love fishing for specks and reds. There is no better teacher than experience but Ive learned a lot from local fishing shows here that are based in the marsh land. I would have to believe that most tactics are universal texas to LA

-working birds
-working points with moving tides
-in the marshes with deep cuts and deep spots during winter
-trying different bait color and cork (for noise) vs swim bait
-finding oyster shells and hard bottoms
-thinking of behavior patterns i.e. as the water warms in the spring the fish will be leaving the marsh for open water in the gulf so thinking where the bait and fish may be with regard to cuts/water movement/transitions between bodies of water

Way to windy out there would have never made it back instead hit mosquito island plenty of pelicans diving but sad results

Confederate reef is in west bay. But east bay can be really good in winter too.

Bait is what I focus on this time of year. So a marsh drain or cut that has good tidal movement should have a flow of bait in and out and it makes a great place for trout to stage up to ambush bait. This is a bayou in Chocolate Bay that would be a perfect place to try with a good tide and some bait activity.
