Cool fish. I'd love to catch one of those.
This is my first season in TX, so for those who've been here longer, what does the winter season on the Red look like? Will the bigger stripers come back up, or does that just depend on rain and flows? Thanks. I am curious to know about how the Red fishes over the winter. I just started fishing it this summer so I am still learning about it each time I go out.

I used to catch them by dropping gold hooks and let them bounce off the rocky bottom as the current took the line down river. Fun to catch. if you tied five hooks to your line, there were times you would hook five fish. The herring run was always fun... then the spawning stripers would come up the river from the Delaware Bay to feed on the herring. Of course, this was the time of year that was closed to striper fishing. But when the seasoned re-opened, 35-45lb stripers were not uncommon. Then later when the water warms up more... you can take advantage of the shad run (poor mans salmon).

Did some research. The Goldeye is native to the Red River. It is a species of "Special Concern", so your CPR was a good thing. Interesting looking fish, and a decent fighter for it's size!
Congrats on a good trip.

The Goldeye has teeth while the skipjack herring doesn't. Both are in the river near the dam.

Stopped by Denison Dam on Sunday, water was low, but the fish were active. No stripers, but caught a few small largemouth and a decent chunk of a spotted bass using white chatterbaits and black and blue jigs.

If you want to know the lake elevation on any given day, water temp, and generation schedule call the corp of engineers recording. They update it daily. The number is 903-465-1491. I have been calling this number for 30 years so I wouldn't think it's a well kept secret.

I haven't been at Denison for so many years. I used to be able to catch stripers whether the water is released or not. When no released, I was able to fish in pockets of water near the gate. Lots of fish in the pockets. How close to the dam can fish now a day? would someone kindly post pictures of fishing near the dam? Thank you in advance.

I don't have any pictures, but here are some videos I have shot of fishing near the dam. All of these fish were caught when they were not releasing water. Denison Dam fishing

You can fish close to the tail-trace on Oklahoma side and also you can fish the pool near the first stair near Texas side if not generating power.
