so many factors involved that will increase/decrease your mpg:

1. tire pressure
2. wet roads
3. hilly vs flat; even if you end up at the same elevation you started at, you will get much better mileage if the roads are flat vs hilly on your way to your destination
4. wind!! maybe the biggest factor
5. speed; as others have said, most get pretty good mpg at 60, not so much at 80
6. rear end ratio; another big item

I have a new 3.5 ecoboost f-150; my mpg goes from about 20.5 @60 (not towing) down to about 17.5 @80, and most vehicles are going to show a similar drop in mpg.

I think the best is the 2.7 ecoboost f-150, but all the manufacturers make a great vehicle. find something you really like, and that's the one.

2015 Toyota Tundra 4x4 crew max. 5.7 v8. Towing a heavy tourney loaded boat 80% of the time. Average around 13.4mph. Average speed around 75mph.

Kinda sick....but man does it haul a boat well. Very easy to drive with a trailer behind it.

2005 f-150 5.4, 15-16 highway and maybe 17 if I really really baby it. Anywhere from 10-13 towing. Usually get about 10-11 with the boat and maybe 13 with a UTV in tow. Probably 14 city.

first off theyre are two things men will lie about ----bootie and gas mileage --
i find it humorous that a lot of people have a 60k boat financed for 12 yrs -and a 60k truck financed for 6 years and they are concerned with the difference in 14 mpg and 16 mpg @ 2.00 a gallon its just not really that big of deal --- when im on the way to fish i have got my foot shoved through the firewall to get there !

I have a $5k boat and just traded my 12 year old truck and $15k commuter car in on a new $30k truck. Mpg is a major factor in cost of usage if it goes back up to $3 or $4 or higher. If it stays low then great. But I don't want to go back to spending $750 a month in gas if it does go back up to $4. My truck is getting 27 mpg now so I don't worry about gas costs as much.

so if gas was 4.00 a gallon --and you spent 750.00 a month on it --750.00 divided by 4.00 = 187.5 gallons per month

187.5 gallons x 27 mpg = 5062.5 driven per month

5062.5 miles driven per month = 60,750 per year

at that rate i fully understand your concern

Seems you are co mingling three different vehicles. Two old ones that burned all the gas and one new one that gets 27 mpg.

My old truck got 15 mpg. Between my wife and I, we spent $750 a month in gas. 2,000 miles a month for me and 1,000 for my wife. I got the commuter car (35 mpg) and it moved to 2,500 in my car and 500 in hers because I took the commuter car on all family outings instead of her car. Minima miles on the truck at that point.

We decided as a family that we wanted to get a bumper pull trailer for vacations. So I needed something that could tow a 7,500 lb trailer and the 27 mpg Ecodiesel is the most efficient option for that. My old truck was a dog when it came to towing. I didn't want something with high mileage because I don't have time to spend repairing vehicles. Lightly used trucks right now are basically the same price as new, so I just hit the bullet and got a new one. Right now, the gas costs aren't enormously different. If gas goes up, I won't be hating myself for having a $750 monthly fuel bill.
