I mean the idea of a grass edge makes sense but what exactly are they and how do you see them on electronics??

Thank You!
Nathan

Think of where your lawn meets the street. Think of that underwater. That's the grass edge.

Fish hang out in the grass and ambush food swimming by, which is why sometimes swimming baits parallel to the grass edge works.

On electronics if you can see grass, and then the grass disappears, that's the grass edge.

There are no fish in sonic pond EDIT: Except 1 20lb catfish

Grass grows at different heights in different lakes. The edge is where the grass stops. The tallest grass that may be as tall as 20 ft. will form a natural wall next to the deeper water. It grows on that contour and follows that contour in and out as the depth changes. Finding it takes time and lots of driving with a split screen. I like down scan on and side scan on.

Once you find one good area with deep grass then doing the rest of the lake is easy. If you find it in the back 1/3 of a big cove then that is where you want to start looking in all the other coves. If you find this grass on a irregular feature like a under water protrusion off the shore or a gouge in the contour line then this is usually where you will find the big Bass stacked up under the hollow of the grass.

Most of our local lakes only have patches of grass growing on the shore line and is not very tall. Fish still like these patches but are usually just hanging around it and there really isn't a long run of it to form a edge as such; or is not tall enough to form this edge because it is only a couple of feet tall and growing in a good fertile area. The next pod may be quite a distance down the bank before you find another.

Then you have the long runs of grass that starts growing in the middle of the ditch near the back of the cut. Some of this grass grows to the surface and forms a MAT on the surface. You can get between this grass edge and the shoreline on both sides. If just grows in the middle of the ditch.

- Deep grass is the best. Bass use the edge for shade and ambush.
- Shallow grass usually grow in pods or short sections. Fish just hang around this for ambush.
- Ditch grass mats on the surface and can grow in some lakes starting at 25 ft. all the way to the back of the ditch.
- Long runs of shore line grass growing out to 8 ft. is another great spot that will hold ambush fish and is tall enough for them to hide in for shade. They use the edge toward deep water to ambush from.
- Sometimes the lake rises and covers all of this which makes it difficult to find for those that do not fish the lake on a regular basis. This rising water makes for a super technique of fishing the inside grass line or edge toward the bank.

On a side note:
Each one of these grass lines calls for different baits and techniques to fish them. I have fished them all over the 50 years of grass fishing and this is what I have had the best result with.

- Deep 20 ft. tall grass - Heavy Drop shot, very short, 1 oz. weight, 5.0 heavy line hook 4" above the weight and using a Gene Lawrue Hoo Daddy Jr. in Watermelon Neon.
- Grass Pods 3' tall - Suspending Rogue and a 12" 1/16 oz Crig. with a Fluke or Grande Ring Fry.
- Long runs of Grass - Spinner Bait to match the weather conditions and a short Crig light weight to 1/8 oz. and a 10" Motor Oil Red Power Worm.
- Ditch Grass - Heavy Drop Shot on the deep stuff and Suspending Rogue as I near the back of the cove.
- Flooded grass - A spinner bait on the inside toward the shore and a Crig on the deep side.
