I started a topic in the jig tying section, with no responses so I thought I would put it here also. I need information to get me started fishing marina slips. I really don't want to use minnows. What type of jigs, size, weight, who to buy from, tips and techniques? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joey J.

I fish them occasionally with a friend who fishes them quite a bit. You can't go wrong with 1/16 oz jig head, I prefer unpainted and sickle hook. You just have to try different color and style plastics until you find what works. Ask the guys fishing the docks you plan to fish what they are using. Some might not share, but some will. Crazy Angler is where I buy my jig heads. I get plastics from multiple places. You can start with ebay. They have a lot of choices. Good Luck and Tight Lines.

One mistake I see often is too many people Bounce that jig all over the place. Try this, just barely submerge your jig and watch. You cannot hold it still, it will Move on its own. Fish at tawakoni have been holding right near the bottom ( last week anyway). Put something in the slips to attract shad Google crappie condos. I like the 1/16th sickle red hooks for jig heads and we like the jig bodies from constant pursuit...

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

You will be surprised how much the bait moves just by holding it still .

Good advice given but I will also offer this piece of advice. Do not use a long rod when fishing slips do to limited overhead space. I use a 5ft 6inch rod when fishing slips.

Short rod, 1000 size reel, 8lb fluoro, tandem jig rig with plastics or hand tied jigs. I use 1/16oz on top(first) jig, and 1/8oz on bottom. Don't actually jig. Just use the rod and move the jigs around the slip, fish very slow and wait for the thump.

I fish Tawakoni slips as well. This time of year when the water temp is falling, I like to use a 32nd or 16th head, I prefer hand ties over plastic. I work my jig very very slow, if I move it at all, keeping it 6" to a foot off the bottom at most. I use hand ties from jigginjerry.com and bonehead plastics. I fished last weekend for the first time since I still have hunting fever and Kodys Papa is spot on, the fish were holding right on the bottom and very finicky. Good Luck!

When fishing marinas, I'll normally use: 6/7' rods, 1/16 pink jighead, 6# mono or either braid with a leader!

As far as jigs, I like to use Constant Pursuit Outtfitters (thump chubbies or jumpers), Thermocline Lures (2" tadpoles, stingers, or Mr Fry), and Crazy Angler slab bandits! These should get cha bit fa sure thumb

For some reason, I like to start at the bottom and work my way up the water column until I find the strike zone!

Katchin krappie...doin surgeries(filleting)...and givin hott grease baths until krunchy and golden brown is what it's all about!!!
