Going to be stationed in San Antonio again in the Spring if the good Lord is willing. Have really taken a liking to fishing for black crappie. Anywhere within a few hours drive worth trying out? Thanks for the info!

Canyon Lake has them including Black Nose. You can catch Blacks but you will also have to catch a lot of whites to get to them. Just curious, but what is it about the Black you like over the White?

Dunlap,Mcqueeney,and Placid hold some Black Crappie. During the spring you should find them in 10 to 15 feet of water hanging by ledges and brush piles. Also overhanging tree limbs same depth hold some fish.

It seems they tend to fit my style of fishing better and since I've been stationed in places with larger populations of Black crappie and had a chance to eat them, it seems they taste better also. I like to cast and pitch with UL and L gear. And, I've caught nice size and number casting and pitching jigs, float 'n jigs, split shot rigs, drop shot rigs, break size crankbaits, etc... It seams like most of what I hear about white crappie is about heavier tackle and/or vertical fishing. Although, when I was fishing in Tennessee and Kentucky while stationed at Fort Campbell, I caught crappie while casting jig and minnow/bobber rigs on Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and the ponds on post. Just didn't seem to catch nearly as many crappie when our last time stationed at JBSA.

I fished those river lakes pretty hard last go round, Chuck and I didn't catch many crappie at all. Plenty redbreasts, redears, gills and warmouth, but no black crappie. Every once in a while a white crappie. Of course, I didn't hit up the river lakes to much in Early Spring since it seemed like every year we were down there we had some heavy flooding. I know they don't just disappear after the Spring spawn, but it seems like the reports really lean out and it was rare for me to catch any crappie from late Spring thru Fall.

I would hit choke canyon lake south of San Antonio about an hour. It has huge crappie in there. The lake is still around 20 feet low but I've heard of some good slabs coming out of it lately.

Launch at Rebecca Creek ramp on the Guadalupe above Canyon off 281...your style of fishing is what I prefer to do and there is a ton of trees to pitch to. You will catch some white crappie, lmb, white bass, the occasional striper, and plenty of Guadalupe bass, but for number of black slabs, that's where I go. Perfect for a kayak or small boat! I have never fished Choke Canyon, but if Pop n Cork says it, I believe it!

I definitely appreciate it, Pop, Chuck and Naggler. Now at least I have a decent list to hit up.
