Dan, I think you've created some fictitious scenario in your head that doesn't fit the scenario of a land owner shooting a dog running around his property chasing deer. Not saying it's right, but just saying I think you went off in a different direction.

If it's a neighbor's dog, I'll give them a warning. If it's a dog I've never seen then it gets no benefit of the doubt.

Tough guy. Shoots collared dogs if he doesn't recognize them.

How many have you taken down?

More dogs than deer?

Technically the people of the state of Texas do own the game within the borders of the state. Thus folks taking illegal game are subject to paying restitution fees. I'd think if it could be proven that one's free ranging canine pet was killing game they could be held to the same standards.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

you may be correct I'm just looking to get the context here. It's still not there.

And the Giants suck. Just saying

Yea. In that same post I said I'd be liable if my dog killed Bambi.

The dog being my property, the deer being the property of the people and state of Texas.

I still don't like the Giants...the context is as I described. A land owner shooting a dog that is chasing deer or screwing up hunting on the land owners property. I don't know if what happened in Ohio was on private or public land, but I'm pretty sure this is the scenario that BCasper is talking about.

Really doesn't matter. Its a felony and he will get to sit in a cell for awhile and think about if it was worth it.

I had a dog digging an enormous hole und the sidewalk of a rent house I lived in in Jacksonville. I called the sherriff's office to see how they wanted me to handle it. The deputy asked me if I had ever heard of the three S's. grin

If someone was doing that call a warden.

You ain't the judge. Shooting collared dogs bcs they spooked your deer is special needs stuff.

Spooked? So if it's a fawn should I just let your mutt kill it when it catches it?

The "mutt" is my property. I own it. I'm liable to the State of Texas if it's out of line and kills Bambi.

You don't own the deer.

This being a very rhetorical argument, my dog will only lick a deer to death... if she could even catch one.

A squirrel shed kill. Would you shoot her then? If you were a hunter of squirrel?

You're correct, Texans own those deer. I pay a fees to hunt and help sustain those resources. The dog being your property has nothing to do with it.

Tell ya what...
I'll train her to squirrel hunt. Squirrel hunting with a dog is a blast. Train them to circle the tree and keep the squirrel distracted from the guy that's about to dust him.

I'll also train her to not chase deer. Help keep her alive for you.

Most guys I hunt with say dogs are shoot on sight. I don't know that I could do it. I would try and find the owner, and discuss the issue.

If it continues to happen, I guess I'll sell my place, buy another, put in the countless hours and hope like hell that all the new neighbors answered truthfully on the survey I sent about how they contain their animals.

2 dogs over 30 yrs of hunting. Do coyotes count? Numbers way higher if so... Cat numbers are in the double digits. Everyone of those sobs that was seen in the pheasant field died.

I have seen both sides of this story, many times. I have hunted where the law mandated that free running dogs be shot during deer season. I have hunted where deer were routinely run with dogs. Both sides of the story had their proponents and their opponents, and both sides often quoted absurd "facts" to back up their opinions.

But I'm really amazed at all of the purported "responsible adults" making idiotic threats here. Those silly threats may come back to haunt some of you some day. If you really are a badass killer of dogs or dog owners or dog killers, you don't need to tell the world about it. We might like to hear your opinion on the matter, and the reasons for your opinion, but I know for a fact that lots of folks here don't want to hear how you would kill the dogs or their owners or their killers. Let's get real here......

Dan, man up a little. Jeepers creepers. No one is coming to shoot your puppy.

I grew up hunting in Pa. The law permitted and encouraged shooting wild dogs that were chasing deer. Much like killing Tilapia if you catch them on Daingerfield I think it is or grass carp at one time. Today, I see that the law in Pa is a little more metrosexualized than it used to be. But back in the 60s and 70s I can assure you, hunting men would not think twice about dropping a pack of dogs chasing down deer.

From the Pennsylvania Game Commission website, general hunting laws:
