Just wanted to follow up here and say thanks for the advice.

I should have noted in my original post that I have a switch that I always use.

From now on I will always charge after fishing and yesterday I swapped my size 24 lead acid for a 31 optima blue top.

Also check your connections and make sure they are clean and tight including the bus bar on the boat. If you have loose or dirty connections that aren't making good contact you will loose power also.
