Boat we just purchased for our high school bass club is only running 12v to the 24v motorguide. I connected the batteries in series and now I am getting a 24v reading to the plug of the TM. However when I push the button to turn on the TM it doesnt run and I get 0v reading until I let off the button, which it goes back to 24v. The TM was running on the 12v set up but not at full capacity. Any thoughts?

Depends on what model Motorguide TM you have. Check your wiring. I have 2 one is a Brute 67 12/24 volt the other is a straight Tour 80 24 volt. Your batteries should be wired like this picture. If you have the 12/24 volt version there will be a switch on the left side of the pedal up 24 down 12 middle off and a 5 speed dial on the right. If it is the straight 24 volt it will have a jackrabbit switch which is high bypass and the variable speed dial on the right. Sounds like you don't have something wired right.

It is a straight 24v 5 speed dial with jackrabbit switch. It might be something in the circuit breaker box. Cant figure why I will get the 24v reading and when the button is pushed volts go to 0.

Have you checked the batteries to make sure they are both good? You can get 24v reading without a load. Then with a load they carp out

Actually no I haven't. I'll put two different batteries on it today and see what that does.

I suspect that you have wired your receptical or plug incorrectly. There are probably three conductors in each. Use your voltmeter to determine which conductors on the receptical are the ground and +24V. Then make sure your plug is wired to match. Make sure to get the polarity correct!!!

44-D has a point. Your circuit may have the volts but breaking down under a load. Either is one or both the batteries or something in the middle, wire make sure there is no frays or worn through spot, breaker the more they trip the weaker they get, connections loose check for discolored wire.

Jumper around the circuit breaker to eliminate it. Even a bad battery will give you some kind of reading, even if it is bad. You have something mis-wired.

This may sound silly, but I have experienced it on other equipment. Make sure you are reading the 24V at the plug with the correct polarity. If you have 24V on the ground and then turn on the switch, you then have 24V on both sides and that gives you a zero difference in potential which gives you a 0V reading.

I bypassed all of the plugs and circuit breaks and wired it directly to two batteries in series. The TM worked on 12v but not on 24v. Going to take the TM somewhere to what is going on. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

No where do I see what trolling motor you have. If you wired the 24V by simply moving either the positive or negative wire from one battery to the other battery, the jumping the two open terminals, there should be no need to rewire the plug. If this was done, and you're loosing voltage (voltage zero's) when placed under the load of the trolling motor, in most cases it is a bad connection not carrying the load. If the trolling motor was a 12/24V trollingmotor, it will have a 12/24 switch on the side instead of the normal con/mom/hbp switch. If it has the 12/24, and was wired through the same circuit as the initial 12V, then you would have 24V on the 12V circuit. This all depends on the way the trolling motor is wired to the plug and how the batteries are wired to the plug -- but basically, if it will run on 12V, it will run on 24V. All the switch does is change circuits. John

The trolling motor is a motorguide 71lb thrust 24V FW-FB, '06 model I believe. No switch on the side to change to 12/24 volt. It is a straight 24.
I took two good 12v batteries and set them up in series and wired it straight to the trolling motor, no plugs or circuit breakers. It did not turn the TM on, but would work on one 12v battery. We are taking it to a shop in FTW to see what we have.
