Almost that time of year. When I see those big 'hoppers jumping here's what I do. My dad showed me this in 1950. I know...old school, but it works. We didn't have the internet to order them on then. Get a loaf of unsliced bread, take a slice off one end and using a knife and your fingers pull all the bread out until you just have a hull. Cut off about a foot of panty hose and wad it up and push it to the back of the loaf. Sit this out in a field where you see hoppers, leave it overnight, they go in to eat the bread, and in the morning they will be stuck to the panty hose by the little stickers on their legs. Freeline them with a small hook for cats under willow trees. Great bait.

when you say freeline. You mean no splitshot or nothing, just a hook, and grasshopper?

Very good bait! I always catch bass, sunfish, and crappie with grasshoppers, more than I do with plastics and hard baits.

You must have to use ultralight gear to cast at any kinda distance.

I use a small split shot sometimes, or a clip-on bobber and no shot. Don't need ultralight gear, but I have some micro-light rods that are fun.

I had someone tell me about this grasshopper thing after I posted one of my new jigs and he thought it may work like the hoppers. What do you think? Here is a link to my post about my Wing Jig. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1184654/page/3#Post1184654

I don't see why not, it looks pretty sweet actually.
Another way to fish hoppers using drop lines or limb lines kinda like what bosun is doing on r/r. Simply tie a your drop off on a limb with no wieght and a hook. Allow for the hopper to barely touch the surface of the water (adjust your tie off by taking slack out) It's best under willow tress and near gravel/sand bars. We used to knock them out doing this on the San Marcos and Guadalupe river..we called them Fly lines..they were quick and easy to set and caught alot of fish.
Yes sir, hoppers are a deadly bait

I catch hoppers at night with a flashlight. At night they get real still and you can just shine the light on them and pick them up.
I like to fish hoppers with my 5 wt fly rod. I just lay them out, no weight. I have caught bream, catfish, bass and even rainbow trout with this setup.

Can you freeze them and fish with them later?
