My friend Geoff and I used to fish Bastrop religiously when we both worked at the same company. He moved off to Wisconsin and although we have stayed in touch via Facebook, it had been 20 years since we'd had the opportunity to see each other and spend time on the water.
Last year he retired and bought a place in Smithville. Since my wife was out of town for the weekend, I had planned to get the boat on the water someplace but really until last week, hadn't made up my mind as to where. I guided on Fayette 20 years ago and haven't fished it in two years so I got in touch with Geoff and the stars aligned for a trip. I knew Sunday a small rain front was coming through so we set the date for Saturday.
We had to do a little exploring but finally found a pattern of fish being in areas where 2-3 types of structure would meet in the backs of creeks and shad were present. The majority of fish were in the 3lb class with one around 4 1/2. Nothing huge but we caught fish all day on shad colored and chartreuse/blue backed suspending crankbaits in 7-12ft of water.
Geoff beat me by one fish but all in all, it just was great to be back on the water fishing with a good friend.
Welcome back to Texas Geoff! Here's to many more days chasing fish!
