is there any benefit to going to a private practice optometrist versus a place like Lenscrafters?

Depends on the optometrist.

There are some dime pieces in those type places from what I've seen. I make sure Lil Moto gets her eyes checked as frequently as possible......for her sake of course. smile

North Dallas Eye Associates has been good to me. Not a big chain. My optometrist is about 4 foot tall. Its awkward.

Personally I have had just as good of experiences with the majors like Lenscrafters than private one. That said I have started using America's Best to fill the prescriptions and they are just as good as Lenscrafters at about half the price or at least way cheaper. I have a tough no line bifocal prescription and they have not missed it yet. Tried at Sam's they simply could not get it right finally had to get a refund they were hopeless.

I choose private practice, but that's just me. I'm sure some of the chains have good optometrists too.

Technically the guys at Lenscfafters, Sears, Wal-Mart, etc are independents. They have to be by State law. That's why there is usually a wall between them and/or separate doors.
If all you need is an Optometrist, they are pretty much the same.

Now if you have some specific issues go to an Ophthalmologist. Totally different degree. I'm a diabetic and need to get checked for Diabetic Retinopathy regularly.
