Just moved to San Antonio and want to try Choke tomorrow. Ive never been on the lake so Im looking for any advice on running the lake (hazards) and which ramp to use. I just ordered my Navionics chips so I wont have gps mapping tomorrow. On anther note, I was coming south from New Braunfels yesterday and saw 5 or 6 bass boats headed north from San Antonio. Was there a tournament around San Antonio yesterday? What bass clubs are around here and where do they fish? Thanks for the help.

There are only 5 or so ramps on Choke. Without GPS I would suggest the South Shore Unit ramp on the southeast side near the dam. Choke is full of trees which some are visible and some are not. Not being able to stay in a channel when running west is an accident waiting to happen.
Where in San Antonio do you live?

think south shore ramp is closed. main lake down by dam is pretty good for running. running now is easy cause you can see most the stumps out of the water. Callihan ramp to dam just stay in river channel or to the south shore- a lot of trees and stumps out in the main lake in front of opossum creek.

I will try Callahan ramp.
Bulletman, I just bought a house in Pleasanton but it will not be ready for about 6 weeks. Until then I'm in SE San Antonio which is a pretty dumpy area. Long story but at least I will only be here for a short time.
Thanks for the help

Lots of hazards you can't see. I wouldn't get on plane with out a GAPS map. Even on the south end.

south shore ramp washed out. If you have a mapping chip in your graph you can run the channel with little fear of hitting stumps- BUT, choke does have a lot of trees and stumps in it- take your time and run a slow track first.

Running the lake is easy with a map card. Go right out of Calliham and you can run all the way to the dam, just stay in the channel. If you go left out of Calliham, be sure to use caution. Getting to 3 fingers/Opossum creek is challenging, and that's putting it mildly.

You guys are going to get someone killed. The channel right past Hog Island (east of it) is full of big trees.

I agree with grout scout and I have been on the lake a lot lately. The channel is where all the big trees are. As you come out of Calliham stay between the island and the bank. As you get to open water keep your eyes open for visible trees. Most of the trees in the main lake are visible at this level.

I try to post these coords as many times as possible, stick them in your graph! Only 1 of them is in play right now, but it's a bad one. It's at the end of Calliham point closer to the Calliham side, do not hug the Calliham side when nearing Hog Island, stay left or smack dab in the center.
I got as close to these hazards as possible, but I'd try to stay at least 75' away.
Choke canyon hazards
N 28 29.487 iron well head W 98 20.755'
N 28 29.553' W 98 20.124' (concrete tower, boat sinker!)
N 28 28.029' concrete chunks (approx area, Naylors Pond dam) W 98 15.957'

tx2step, PM sent.
Grout Scout sent me a map with lines on how to run the lake and I made it home safely with my lower unit still in tact. I ended up catching a few with one over 6 lbs. Pretty daunting lake to try to maneuver around so I didn't run around too much. I did make it from Calliham to 4 fingers though. Thanks for all the help!
