I'm in the market for a couple of new rods. I'm getting tired of the Ducket rods breaking. I'm seriously looking at the Dobyns line. Not knowing much about these, which one would you consider for 1/4-3/4 oz worms, jigs? I'm thinking a med/heavy rod.

Are there any other rods you would consider over the Dobyns line?

How much do you want to spend? I personally use the Champion and Champion Extreme models. For the applications you are describing I suggest the 734 Champion or 744 Champion Extreme. They're about a $100 difference, so $250-$350.

Also, wanted to add my personal input on the 734 Champion being the most versatile rod I own. I use one for buzz baits with braid, and others for t rigs and light pitching with flouro. It's a little more parabolic, so you can use it for swim jigs and chatter baits also and get a good hook set but not pull the bait out of the fish's mouth.

Thanks for the input DEFMP. I'm not too concerned with the price point, I just want a rod that is light and sensitive, with enough back bone to get a fish out of mild cover. In your opinion is the Champion 734 too light to fish light grass and cover?

If price isn't a concern as you mentioned you should consider G Loomis, Kistler and Power Tackle.

For a great rod at a good price point look at Powell.

I would get the 745hp. That is a good all around rod for what your wanting

Dobyns made in Korea would be the deal killer for me

Both the 734 and 744 will be good for grass, in fact I once used the 734 as a frog rod as I forgot my regular frog rod at home. Handled fine for light/medium grass. The 704, both extreme and champion may be too parabolic with not enough tip for grass. I use the 704 as a jig skipping rod for docks. I also have two 745, and in my opinion 3/4 oz jig is the lightest I'd go with the rod, or a 1/2 oz tungsten with 10" worm. It's stiff and IMO better for C-Rig or pitching. But it is a great heavy jig rod, I mainly use it for heavy jigs and C-Rig.

Champ 704,705,734,735 and DX 704,705,744,745 will all work great. If you're not concerned on price point look at a G Loomis NRX 853,854,893,894, you can thank me later.

I also want to throw out there, that the fury line is pretty damn good at $100~ a rod. I like the 704 personally for that application

I use the 705 for pitching jigs under docks and the 745 for pitching to longer distance targets.

Like someone previously said the Powell rods are a good rod for the price. I have several of them also. A 4 power Powell rod is similar to a 5 power Dobyns Extreme.

Power Tackle PT-104 is another very good worm and jig rod.

Kistler and Loomis are good quality rods. I have several of each of these rod brands also.

Any of them would be fine for what you are wanting.

If you're planning to stay more in the 1/4 - 3/8 range, I'd say 4 power. 744 extreme or 734 champ. If you plan to throw more 1/2 - 3/4 oz, then it's 5 power all the way. 745 extreme or 735 champ. You really need two rods to cover that weight range well, IMO. If it has to be one rod, then for me it would be 735 champ. It's got a ton of power, but a tip that will allow you throw 1/4 oz plus plastic all day.

Thanks for all of the responses! I'm leaning toward the 734 now. I mostly throw baits in the 1/4 - 1/2 oz range. I may just pick up the heavier action as well to throw the heavier baits.

I think you really want the Champion 744 that just came out. This rod was created to fish jigs/plastics and just came out. It is slightly stiffer than the 734. Call the factory to talk to Richard or Gary - they will give you great advice.

734 is great! I throw football jig, c-rigs, tx rigs on it with 15-20# lines
