Water intake is the most important, then Potassium and Magnesium.
I had RLS for years. Restless Leg Syndrome. I have just about gotten rid of it through many trail and errors. Sleep meds and Benadryl made it worse....go figure.

First, make sure you are getting enough potassium.
I had them so badly as a young child that I end up with physical therapy for a year or so. Stretching exercises they had me do.

Always stretch day and night. Notice every animal in the world wakes up and stretches? BUT as a human, I bet most people don't stretch.

who gets em and how the heck do you stop em! Another question....why do you think you get them? Workout legs hard? Don't drink water or electrolytes? Drink alcohol much? How is your blood work?

The obvious...
Drink more water earlier, say, 6-9, so that you don't have to get up too much at night Try drinking some pickle juice as well, a couple swigs an hour before bed
Sour cherry juice before bed helps with joint aches, (even though that was not the problem in this case)

I have had these all my life now I use several methods which helps quite a bit one are the Hyland's Leg Cramp Pill from Walmart: Leg Cramp Pills Another is when sweating a lot try PJ Sport (pickle juice) or just eat a couple of pickles and take a big swig of the juice. Gatorade is okay but but not as good. Stretching helps but won't eliminate mine without the above. If I have a really bad one in the middle of the night Absorbing Junior helps get rid of it fast. BTW I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplement every day but still get them if I don't do the above.

When I get them, i eat a banana and they go away for a good while. Not enough potassium in the diet

I took those too (Leg Cramp Pills, above).....they did help some when it got real bad. I tried just about everything. I still keep them, but haven't used them in awhile.
I think it's a experiment to find the right concoction of things that help you personally.
Getting your vitamins, magnesium dose as high as you can handle, electrolyte levels up, not much alcohol, all should be starting points.....
I found Valerian Root to help me relax along with melatonin 3mg.
It takes me a full glass of water after dinner to take my pills. LOL! BUT by golly I'm getting 7-8 hours of sleep now....been over 15 years since I got this kind of sleep.
Lack of sleep will make you crazy. I went years with 2-4 hours a night....laying there 8-10 hours. Not fun.
