What's the best way to attach a treble hook to the back of a soft swim bait? I've been using the Havoc grass pigs on a weighted swim bait hook a lot lately but it seems like my hookup ratio is pretty low.

Get a owner stinger treble hook and tie it with 65lb braid. Then just tie it to the eye of your hook and position where ever you want on the bait.

My favorite way is pretty simple. For a 4' or 5" swim bait I put the swim bait on the main hook head as normal. Push the main hook all the way thru the bait until it is laying along the back of the swim bait. Take a treble hook (#4 works well) and put a trailer hook shrink tube over the eye of the treble hook. Then push the shrink tube onto the point of the main hook with the treble single hook facing down toward the bait. Hook this single hook into the back of the swim bait with the opposing double hook facing up. This set up will definitely improve your hook ups and will be most effective in open water or kept up over the grass. But using the treble hook it will definitely hang up more often.
For the larger swimbaits instead of a shrink tube over the eye I will tie a loop of braid thru the treble hook eye and then attach it to the swim bait main hook by making a loop knot over the main hook. The braid allows the tail of the hook to swim and roll like normai
John K Fontenot Diapers and Politicians need to be changed often; and for the same reason.

I saw on a show the other day that you can use two rivets to make a line-thru. Take the "nail" portion off and just use the piece with the hole in it. You need two for each bait. One for the head and one for the belly. You can then run your line though and attach any hook you want. They weren't using shrink tube inside the rivet, but I would. It would prevent the line from getting damaged.

I saw the rivet thing on a show the other day too but I can't for the life of me remember which show I saw it on. And of course I wasn't paying close enough attention at the time

Here is a link to the way Zona described it. Zona and Defoe Swimbait rig If you read down to planets collide Ott's rig differs a little. He uses a second pop rivet in the nose and a Offshore Angler Rigging Needle to thread the line through with.

I have messed with the 2 rivet rig in the garage. i got a box of medium rivets at Lowe's - they are 6mm long and 3mm wide and fit nicely into the 4.8" ribbed swimbait like a Tail Slapper or the Swing Impact Fat.
I have used a piece of craft wire with a hook on one end to run through the rivets and the plastic and grab the line - makes a good looking rig.
Sorry I can't give a on the water report as I am breaking in two brand new knees....not ready to take on balancing on a trolling motor yet....
