I am trying to decide whether to invest in side imaging. I am a weekend bass fisherman, not a very good one at that but I enjoy it. How many of you have side imaging, and would now never go without it no matter the cost? And... can you see if fish are under docks with it?

Neither am I but, yes....IMO....it will help. It does take some time to learn what you are seeing and what to look for but, it is yet another great tool Expensive, yeah...but, how much do you anticipate spending on your 'hobby' ? JMO God Bless Lee

I have caught a lot of really big bass this year and not a single one came from an image from my SI or DI. ...I have two of them, one up front and one on the console. Wish I had that money back to spend on a better TM.
Sonar and GPS, OTH, I use everyday all day.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

I bought a 9" touch screen and very rarely use it. I use my sonar and maybe the downscan a lot but not the side scan. In fact, if you want to do some horse trading ........... ?

I use the DI beside my 2D sonar. The SI you will use to check out bottom the first time after that you will not use it much. The SI will show under docks and fine fish very quickly for you so if you fish a lot of docks it will let you drive by and fine the fish then fish instead of having to fish every one. I think I will always have it but because of the DI not the SI for me. just my .02

People who say you don't need it, probably don't understand how to use it to it's full capability, or do not understand it's true purpose. You're not going to see more fish with SI, but what you're going to do is find better fishing spots. Example: summer fishing we are out deep fishing points and humps, but with SI I can find a rock pile, brush pile, shell bed, etc faster and more efficiently. Bass don't randomly hang out in deep water, they're at those spots for a reason, and prefer some type of cover. This is a just an example as there are many uses for SI, but again I will say it will not help you see more fish.

IMO side imaging is worth it and will show you more fish but had you asked this question before my trip with Slade Daughtery I would have said it's not worth the money. If you do decide to upgrade do yourself a favor and contact Slade and book a trip you will be glad you did.

To me it's more of a tool to find rock piles, brush etc. that you normally may not see. The only thing I will do different for my next graph is get the hds12 I love the side imaging!

Worth every penny, even more for the weekend fisherman. You are more likely to know the lake as well. The si will let you search larger areas than anything else. Just imagine scanning 100' to either side of the boat in one pass as oppose to maybe 20' directly under. You'll find things that you have passed by for years but just hasn't gone close enough to with just downward sonar.
I have never gone a day in the boat without using my si. I can't imagine why someone would have it and not use it.

Without side scan i feel like i may not have found this litle ledge with rock all over it and definitely would not be able to understand how it lays out within a few seconds with out side scan. In the bridge picture you can really get a feel for how the fish are relating to the bridge. These are just a few examples of how it helps me.

If you're just going to beat the bank, it's not worth it. If you want to fish offshore at all, then it's worth every penny. I use it for finding spots, not fish.

If you want to learn how to use Side scan, I would take a class with a guide. Many will offer to take you out to a lake also and show you the basics. I use my Side scan a lot and wouldn't be able to find the schools of shad down here on Rayburn without it!!!
Send it!

Wow, excellent information everybody. I am not good at fishing offshore and I am needing to learn. Sounds like I need to invest in one, then find someone to mount it properly for me. I put a Helix 7 DI on the bow no problem but mounting by the console may be out of my league. (Basstracker 175)

You need to realize that when you fish that deep your gonna need all new tackle! 1/2 oz plus jigs, shakeys etc! Fishing deep isn't cheap either!
