I sold an older junky pick up about 2-3 mo ago

Got a bill today for $32. That DB obviously hasn't put the truck in his name.

He paid cash and signed the title while I was there.

What kinda hell am I in for? How do I prove I don't own it?

Show them a bill of sale, I'm sure you got one right?

There is a from the state you need to fill out and send them. You should have made the buyer sign it but I think you can get by without their signature. If you call NTTA about it they will know the form and that they need a copy. You will need the VIN.

Call customer service first thing tomorrow. Hopefully you have his information, and can give it to them along with notifying DPS. Ask NTTA how these issues have historically resolved. This has had to have happened 1000s of times before.

There are no photos of the driver only of the plates. The good news is $32.00 is not too much ( so far).

Not at Home. Don't have the form. Anytime you sell a vehicle. Fill out the form that day. It may take a while, but you've got documentation if you fill it out. I sold a truck several years ago. Guy didn't register it in his name. NTTA tried to come back to me. I showed the the form. Game over.

I had bad problems on a vehicle I never owned. Different story there.

Every time this topic comes up I say the same thing. When you sell a vehicle in Texas - ON THAT DAY - you go to the Texas website to notify the state that you are no longer the owner of the vehilce:

https://etag.txdmv.gov/Vehicle/MainTransferNotification.aspx

It's an online form that you fill out & submit in just a few minutes. Print out a copy for your records, and all future tolltags, fines, parking tickets, etc are not your worry.

Yep.

I have the buyer fill out the paper form in person and I use the info they put on the form to fill out the online submission. I save a copy of both. Easy protection.

It's a lot easier to take off the registration, tolltag, and take off the plates. Either that or meet at the courthouse and transfer.
