Here is a little background...

I have grown up fishing saltwater pretty much my whole life. Well, now I have moved to DFW, and it is really hard to find some good salt water around here. LOL. Anyway, I have been getting into fresh water fishing pretty hard and now I am looking to try fly fishing. I have a trip scheduled in a couple of weeks with some of my buddies from college to go to Norfolk, Arkansas to go fly fishing on the White River. We just thought it would be an awesome time to take some time off of work and spend some time with the boys. I have gotten a semi-cheap fly rod and reel combo, my breathable waders, wading boots, a small assortment of flies, and a growing urge to learn how to use it all. I was curious as to if anyone would have any good pointers for me in getting started. I am by no means trying to be a pro. I know this takes tons of time to master. I am an avid outdoorsman, so I am always looking to expand my methods. If you have any tips on casting, flies, techniques, or if you want to teach a guy how to fish around the metroples I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry I got so long winded. Thanks for reading! cheers

The first thing is to learn to cast, which can be done just about anywhere. There are few if any shortcuts to learning to cast other then taking a lesson or two from a instructor. Look up the local fly club and they will be happy to show you the ropes.

I live in CS and am ready to try flyfishing more. I have had a setup for a couple years and have only caught few LM bass and half of them swallowed my fly. I can cast a little, but need some pointers on rigging. What is the best knot to connect the mono leader to the fly line without having problems?

Thanks for any help.

Charlie,
There are several ways to tie on a leader but most everyone I know uses the loop system now but a good nail knot works well.

Charlie 5001,
Folks from Dallas Flyfishers Club be glad to show you exactly what you're asking about. We are scheduled to be at Bass Pro Shop in Garland over the week-end. Iknow I'll be there on Sunday March 4. If the weather permits we might go down to the water and do a little practice casting.
I'm not sure, but they may enlist me to be there on Saturday. No, I don't work for Bass Pro and I won't try to sell you rods, reels or flies.
If you are unable to get to BPS Garland this week-end drop me an e-mail and we'll work up a "lesson plan."

He leadeth me beside still waters.

Fly, unfortunately I will not be able to make it this weekend. I am headed to Houston for the rodeo. However, I would take you up on a "lesson plan" as you put it.

5wt, thanks again for the PM. I have been to Bear Creek Park with fly rod and with ultra light gear, but I have not had much luck there.

TTguy,
I alos live in keller and wouldn't mind getting together for some fishing! I flyfish almost exclusively and would also be happy to give you some pointers.

Fly,
Thanks for the invite, but I am too far away down in College Station. It is nice to see that there are so many helpful outdoorsmen out there and makes you want to pass the vibe along.

Hey TTguy,
I suggest the free bass proshops fly fishing class (grapevine). I did it before i went and spend XXXXX on fly gear. Mike hill was my teacher..he is really helpful. its free, what can it hurt to go??!!! the class is at 1pm on saturdays and they provide all the fly poles and reels.

scroll down to the fly fishing section.
