No doubt! And the only ferrets found in the wild on this continent are endangered and live in the Great Plains.

Otters will decimate the fish in a confined, private pond setting....7-20 lbs/day is a pretty good estimate. They are probably found on 3/4 of the lakes in TX. One of their telltale signs is a "latrine"....a big pile of crawfish parts and fish scales they leave on their trails along point, peninsulas, etc.

They are not known to dig their own tunnel and burrow systems, but they will enlarge ones that beavers have started. Bob Lusk told me that otters cause private pond dams to wash out a LOT due to that.

I don't think your statement about the Ferrets and great plains is true. I have seen ferrets (or Weasels) on both the Lake Conroe Dam rip rap and the Lake Livingston Dam Rip Rap. I have seen several on both of these dams.

Ferrets are commonly kept as pets but they don't live here. (A "ferret" is a domesticated European Polecat)

Minks and weasels look similar, and do live here. Those are probably what you've seen on Conroe and Livingston. I've seen minks and otters on Ray Hubbard.

Otters...There are some in Lake Waco. I was fishing some logjams in Hog Creek and i kept hearing this kinda growl...looked down the bank and there were two staring at me.

So after reading this thread, I have concluded they could be otters, mink or ferrets, probably not nutria and more than likely not beavers unless they make a big splash with their tails. bolt
