Penn 4300 or 4400 are good salt water reels. Just clean them after you use them in salt water.

I'm not big on spinning reels, but I have a couple for 'those' situations. I've had several different brands, but a while back Shane Moore at SW'rn Parts sold me a Shimano, and it is the best I've owned. He kept saying Shimano had the best spinning reels, and I think he's right, especially on the cheap end.

I would agree with both Tx. Fisher and Bass Art. Penn's have strong gears and can take some abuse but so can the Shimano's. My suggestion would be a Shimano. They are smoother, have the instant anti-reverse, and are lighter.

I have a Penn 4300SS and a 430SSG. They are solid but not as smooth as the Shimano. I bought them because they were Made in the USA. The new Penn spinners are now made in China. My next spinning reel will be a Shimano.

Daiwa Tierra is better than all the reels listed above and can be had for your price.

I have been blown away by the Team Daiwa Tierra. Lots of reel for the money and it is silky smooth with a great drag as well.

I really like the new Quantum PT spinning reel. It's light, but has great drags. It has a titanium bail and is magnetic instead of bail spring. I've got two of the 20's and one of the 40's for inshore fishing and they've performed better than I expected. You should check them out: Quantum Catalyst Spinning Reel At Cabela's, if you buy it and don't like it, you can return it no questions asked. Not associated, just satisfied.
