We are considering going to New Mexico around Christmas with just my family (wife and kids). None of them have ever been skiing. You think 5 years old is to young? Any good tips on where to go? Angel fire is where I have been looking. angel fire or taos, wife will probably like taos a little more. at 5 take the kiddo to the ski school and let them have a day there, maybe 2. they have a ski school for kids at every major resort, they know what they are doing and kids will laarn faster from a stranger most times. look at the terrain available, you want blues and a couple of bunny hills for the first day or so with the kids. greens for the kids/parents, blues for mom and dad alone time while kids are in school. pick your date wisely grasshopper, go during an off period, no holiday close and after christmas is best for snow up there. pm me if I can help, after 20 yrs in colorado at resort towns I learned one or two things. oh, the pick your date is so you can order lift tickets, do a package deal with a room and you save a bunch on tickets but not so much on the room.

Ruidoso sucks, driving up to the top of Ski Apache is a nightmare. My wife was freaking out and we didn't even get all the way to the top. About all there is to do there other than skiing is the tube thing and even that gets boring after the first day.

Those guys think Ruidoso is the only place a human can go on vacation.

Angel Fire was the first ski vacation for the first family maybe 25+ years ago which started yearly excursions to Crested Butte, Breckenridge, and many others over the course of 10+ years.
I'm much older now and on the second family but there are many fond memories of driving to and enjoying many ski destinations from Angel Fire to Steamboat.

Yeah, I suppose if you want to gamble than it would be OK; because you could get drunk and lose money all day.

wolf creek is a great place too, not sure about the kiddo slopes up there though.
pagosa for a room/house and use the natural hot springs in the evening.
for what you want though angel fire is my top pick.
for more of a drive, snow, go to copper mt. they are real kid friendly and used to have an awesome night tubing run.. one of the best resorts in co. imo.
