OK...just moved to San Antonio....went out yesterday to explore Canyon. Not only did I catch NOTHING but a stupid perch on a squarebill.....I wasn't even marking fish in the channels out deep. Fished points, marinas, ran up river and flipped the sticks.....nothing. Please somebody give me something. This is the closest lake to may house..is my home lake the Dead Sea??

Canyon can be fire or ice, depending on the weather and water level. Think finesse.

Not a Dead Sea but challenging at times for sure. Our last couple of times have not been all that great.
Try finesse techniques. Look up all of the "fish attractors" on the Corps of Engineers site. They do hold fish at times.
Canyon fish also suspend and will be at the level or below schools of bait fish. We have caught them in schools containing Whites, Stripers, and LMBs. Smallmouths are around rocky bluffs but will also school with Whites. Birds can be a clue where to look.
I have been most successful on T-rig Worms and finesse worms on a shaky head. Try a tube on rocky flats and around bluffs. We have caught some good smallies on Tubes. During cooler weather I have caught LMBs and SMBs up shallow on 1.5 squarebills. This is usually a dawn bite and goes quickly after sun up.

Try a 6XD type bait over the fish attractors or a drop shot.

It can be tricky finding out what they want on a particular day.

I'm no expert on Canyon, but seems to me the fish are deeper than you might think because of the clearer water. For me, this has been a classic structure lake, but add 10-15 feet to your normal fishing depths.

Get used to it being a Dead Sea... A few have learned it, but I never will. They were catching some hogs last year there.

For a short weekly tourny there are great bags (12+ lbs) being turned in week after week......doesn't look too dead to me. I think that lake is just finicky and you have to spend your time learning it.

Dont give up on it. I'm by no means any good on this lake, but it has fished better this year than it has in years, maybe ever. The lake finally has some color to it, and holds a lot of bait which neither have been the case in years past. There is also grass coming back in a few places around the lake.

The one thing about Canyon is most of the fish are constantly moving, I'm assuming. I cant tell you how many times guys have shown me pics of some incredible sacks and then struggle to catch anything just days after or even the day after. Very few are able to repeat their success day after day, well, except early this year when the lake was truly on fire and fishing better than most lakes in central Texas.

You can fish deep and catch bunches throwing drop shots and shakey heads almost every time out, that pattern usually always holds true for small fish, but the big stringers are getting caught shallow. There are fish year round in shallow water, and I'm talking in 1' or less. Swimbaits and topwaters have been the best producers for me as far as quality and all my quality fish this year have been in less than 6' of water.

Some days they are in the shallow stickups, some days they are on shallow rock, or somedays on big standing timber. I've taken my kids a few times this summer and they threw wacky rigged 6" senkos on rock bluffs in 50+' of water just letting it sink slowly to they bottom and they caught a ton of fish every time but didnt catch anything bigger than 2 pounds doing so. Oddly enough I get more bites on 6" senkos and bigger sized swimbaits than the 5" senkos or small swimbaits.

If you look at those TTZ reports look depressing when you see 60 anglers catching 60 fish in 3 1/2 hours, but then you look a little closer and every night about 5 teams are limiting. I fish this lake all the time due to it being so close to me as well, but it is taking me forever to figure out, not to mention the nearly constant winds blowing to make it harder.

I do not have a full grasp on it yet but I have a lot more luck on dropshot, t-rig and wacky senkos shallow than anything else on a consistent basis. Small swimbaits have produced pretty well for me as well. I love throwing spinnerbaits, cranks, and chatterbaits but it seems to be a really inconsistent bite for me. I've thrown the heck out of a c-rig/cranks deep over what looks like fish without much success. The biggest piece of knowledge that I can pass on is that there seems to always be an incredibly shallow bite. Last friday I caught all my fish in about 4' water all on finesse and today I caught several flipping the shallow sticks in about 3-5' as well.

I would love to fish this lake with someone who actually knows what they are doing

I won't quit on it though, if nothing else i'm improving my boat control and flipping and casting into the wind lol

well....some of the guys catching quality bags week after week on canyon are fishing brush piles that they personally planted earlier this year. I'm not saying they aren't good sticks, they still have to catch them, but they have the odds stacked in their favor. And no this isn't rumor or hearsay, I've personally seen the brush going in the lake.

Most lakes out here do well with piles. Canyon is one of them. Can't beat em, join em...

I prefer to not break the law when I fish...especially if I'm fishing for other peoples' hard earned money. Canyon is a Corp of Engineers lake and brush piles are prohibited. I feel like if I was going to do that I might as well stop by the pond in my neighborhood and load my live well, it's full of 5lbers that eat just about anything.
